UPDATE 3/16/12 @ 6:00 p.m. CABELL COUNTY, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- Two people have been arrested and one person is on the run after a robbery and shooting at the Milton Flea Market.
Cabell County Sheriff's deputies say they are searching for Brett Newman, 31, of Huntington. He is accused of shooting Edward Perry, a longtime vendor at the market in a robbery that went very wrong very quickly.
“It was scary, it could be me the next time,” Boyd Meadows said.
Meadows is the owner at the flea market. He heard the gunshots and saw one of the suspects drive off. He didn't mind sharing what he witnessed this morning when one of his vendors was shot.
“I pulled up and heard three gunshots. I saw the car with the trunk up and door open,” Meadows said.
Meadows says Edward Perry was just arriving at the market to open his booth where he bought and sold gold and silver. His car was towed away by investigators. They say Perry was getting out of his car when Brett Newman and Romel Green showed up with guns in hand to rob him. They tied his hands, but when he tried to run away, Sheriff Tom McComas says Newman fired shots.
The two took off--dropping quite a bit of the loot in the process including gold coins and other items. They jumped in the getaway car driven by Tiffany Whittenburg.
“I didn't know what was going on. Wrong place, wrong time. “Were you surprised to know someone had been shot,” asked WSAZ.com's Carrie Cline.
“I didn't know what was going on,” said Whittenburg.
“I followed the car and got the license number and called 911,” Meadows said.
“I have to thank those at the flea market for their extreme cooperation that really made a difference in this case,” Sheriff Tom McComas said.
That quick thinking by meadows lead to the discovery of the car near the Huntington Mall and two of the suspects at the Barboursville Walmart. Deputies believe Newman is now back in the Huntington area.
“You should not approach him. He should be considered armed and dangerous,” Sheriff McComas said.
Whittenburg and Green are in the Western Regional Jail charged with attempted first degree murder, armed robbery and conspiracy. They're on a $750,000 cash bond.
Sheriff McComas says Perry is at St. Mary's Medical Center where he's in stable condition.
UPDATE 3/16/12 @ 5:00 p.m. CABELL COUNTY, W. Va. (WSAZ) --The Cabell County Sheriff has released the name of a vendor who was shot during a robbery at the Milton Flea Market.
Sheriff Tom McComas says Edward Perry, a longtime jewelry vendor at the flea market, was shot twice -- once in the chest and once in the leg.
Perry was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.
Deputies arrested and charged Tiffany Whittenburg, 33 and Romel Green, 20, with attempted first degree murder, first degree robbery and conspiracy.
A third suspect, Brett Newman, remains on the run.
UPDATE 3/16/12 @ 2:30 p.m. CABELL COUNTY, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- The Cabell County Sheriff's Department has arrested and charged Tiffany Whittenburg, 33 and Romel Green, 20, both of Huntington with Attempted First Degree Murder, First Degree Robbery and Conspiracy. A third suspect, Brett Newman, is still on the run.
According to the criminal complaint, the three suspects drove Newman's car to the Milton Flea Market with the intent to rob the victim, who is a vendor there. Whittenburg drove the car.
Once there, Newman and Green took a .38 caliber and SKS Assault Rifle and approached the victim.
The report says they tried to rob the victim, forcing him to the ground and trying restrain his hands. But, the victim got up and ran away. That's when deputies say the two chased him and Newman shot at him three times, hitting him twice in the chest and leg. They were able to get away with a briefcase.
Deputies found Green and Whittenburn, along with the car near the Huntington Tennis Club on Nichols Drive in Barboursville.
Green and Whittenburg are in the Western Regional Jail on a $750,000 bond.
Police haven't released the victim's name yet pending notification of family. Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas has called a 3:30pm press conference to release all of the details along with a photo of the Newman, who's still on the run.
For the escaped perp I have a prayer he is caught and nobody else will be his victim.
A small, close community with dear people. Not a lot of crime, and it just shows this kind of thing can happen anywhere. Prayers for the victim.
