9 Milwaukee County judges signed Walker recall petitions

A Dane County judge who issued a temporary injunction against Wisconsin's photo ID voting law last week, David Flanagan, drew a barrage of criticism for not disclosing he had signed a petition for a recall election of Gov. Scott Walker. The state Republican party filed a judicial ethics complaint against him over the controversy.

One other Dane County judge had signed a recall petition.

In Milwaukee County, it appears at least nine of 47 circuit judges signed: Bonnie Gordon, Charles Kahn, Mary Kuhnmuench, Dennis Cimpl, Jane Carroll, Jean DiMotto, Karen Christenson, Marshall Murray, and Michael Dwyer.

The names came back on a search of a database set up by Verify the Recall. There might be others who signed who are not part of the database.

None of them are presiding over cases directly related to the recall effort, or a statewide issue like the photo ID voter bill, but Cimpl has been on two criminal cases against men Walker had appointed to jobs when he was county executive.

Timothy D. Russell, Walker's one-time deputy chief of staff, and Kevin Kavanaugh, a county veterans official , were charged in January with embezzling more than $60,000 meant for veterans and their families, as part of an ongoing John Doe investigation.

Russell's case was assigned to Cimpl's court after a preliminary hearing before a court commissioner. But the first thing his lawyers did was file for a substitute judge. The case was transferred to Judge J.D. Watts, who recused himself. The case is now before Judge David Hansher.

Judge are absolutely not supposed to engage in any political actions, period.

Nor even to make their political views known, period.

Someone should complain to the judicial standards commission.

Sitting judges should not be active in political campaigns. As rules don’t matter to liberals, at least their bias is documented.
