I just bought and partially read “The Thomas Sowell Reader,” a hardback book with a collection of about 100 previously printed essays. The essays would make interesting reading for a high school reader to discuss with his/her parents.
I keep it in my car and read the stories when I’m not texting while driving (just kidding)... when I’m waiting for the big boss to exit from the grocery store. One essay that I ranked high was “Is the Family Becoming Extinct?”
An interesting quote: “Women who are shacking up are four times as likely as wives to become victims of violence, and their children are 40 TIMES as likely to be abused by live-in boyfriends as by their own parents.” (emphasize added).
The essay after this one echoes Theodore Dalrymple’s themes from his book “Life at the Bottom.” All the essays are quick to read and provide interesting observations and statistics.
