Little Rock airport renamed in honor of Bill and Hillary Clinton (X42: "We are humbled")

At Little Rock National Airport, it's two for the price of one. No, we're not talking about airfares, but Clintons.

The Arkansas capital's Municipal Airport Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to rename the airport in honor of the former president and the current secretary of State, a rare twin billing for the state's former first couple.

The change won't be official until the Federal Aviation Administration signs off. Adams Field, the designation for the airport's aeronautical operations, will remain the same.

"Bill and Hillary Clinton not only devoted years of service to Arkansas, but have served the nation as a two-term President, and as First Lady, U.S. Senator, and Secretary of State -- that’s a legacy of which all Arkansans can be proud," Jim Dailey, chairman of the airport commission, said in a statement. "The Clintons continue to have a major impact on our state and our local economy, and we believe renaming our airport in their honor is a fitting way to recognize their service and their position in Arkansas and our nation's history."

The commission noted in its decision the draw that Bill Clinton's presidential library in Little Rock has become, as well as the economic development it spurred in the city's downtown. The Clinton Library is the state's top attraction for out-of-state visitors.

The former president released a statement saying that he and his wife "are humbled" by the decision.

"We are grateful for this honor and for all that the people of Arkansas have done for us. And we look forward to many happy landings at the airport in the years ahead,"

What if they get divorced? Does only one of them get to keep the airport?

Things just shouldn’t be named after living persons. It’s creepy.

For perhaps the only time in their lives.

Things just shouldn’t be named after living persons. It’s creepy.

The entire convention of naming things has become overly politicized, and therefore out of whack.

I am no fan of Bill Clinton, but I can understand why Little Rock would want to honor a governor who went on to become president. OTOH, what, exactly did HRC do for the state?

Meanwhile, here in NYC, we just renamed the Triboro bridge for for Robert Kennedy, a man who served three years as NY senator, one of which was spent exclusively campaigning for president. Senator Kennedy, who was not from NY, established residence in the state because his brother had already taken the available seat in Massachusettes. He had no significant personal accomplishments as NY senator. The bridge was named after him because he was assassinated in California, and because of his last name. There is no bridge in NYC named for Nathan Hale, who gave up his one life for his country near 66th St. on September 22, 1776. There is no bridge named for Teddy Roosevelt. Ed Koch deserves the Queensboro Bridge (no pun intended). Robert Kennedy is far down the list of deserving NYers.

One of my wife’s former classmates should get credit, but there is only so much space in a tagline.

Is this the same airport that Clinton’s buddy flew cocaine to for all those years he was governor?

To be fair and balanced, it should have been named the “Huckabilly” airport.

Motto: “we got room for all kinds of baggage”.
