U.N. asked to investigate solitary confinement as torture

Calling solitary confinement "torture," California prisoners and advocates are asking the United Nations to investigate the segregated housing of gang members at prisons throughout the state.

"We have California treating several thousand prisoners in much the same way the U.S. government treats enemy combatants held in Guantanamo," said Peter Schey, an attorney representing hundreds of inmates.

Schey, who announced the petition at a news conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday alongside prisoners' relatives, said solitary confinement was devastating to the physical and mental health of prisoners and was likely to increase their risk of committing more crimes upon release.

The petition was filed on behalf of about 400 prisoners, including Walter J. Coto at Corcoran State Prison.

"Every single moment I've spent in these torture chambers has chipped away my humanity," Coto wrote.

Psychological mumbo jumbo.

Yeah, they are loners so solitary could reinforce that.
Who cares? They aint going anywhere. They are busted and in incarceration.
What ya gonna do? introduce then into the general population to mellow them out with an ice cream social?

Heckfire, my office is smaller than a jail cell, has a sliding door like a jail cell, and there is no “time off for good behavior”. The reward for doing a good job is a bigger pile of work and a shorter schedule to complete it in.

"We have California treating several thousand prisoners in much the same way the U.S. government treats enemy combatants held in Guantanamo,"

And most likely for the same reason: they are either security risks or management risks, or both. It's sound correctional practice to isolate the problem children from the rest of the population who more or less just wish to "do their time".

Git a rope.
We aren’t rehabilitating these folks.
They are in for life.

Hear, hear!

I am all for doing away with solitary confinement. Especially for child molesters, they are sometimes held separately to protect them from other inmates.

I wouldn’t mind reading about some prison justice....

Ouch.

Yes, we really need to provide our social predators with gourmet meals; individually tailored exercise programs in modern, well-stocked gymnasiums; soft beds with clean sheets in hotel-style rooms; full medical and dental coverage; color television and a full range of DVD movies; and designer uniforms.

Otherwise, a gaggle of UN bureaucrats from some third world rat hole without indoor plumbing may think us barbarians.

Makes lots of sense.
