It's actually: “Groupe D’Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale” ...but that's trivia and you're correct they have a reputation for being serious operators.

Over two decades ago I remember reading that the GIGN were rather unique amongst special operators, in that they adopted the .357 magnum “wheelgun” as a standard sidearm. After a quick check, I see they currently carry the French Manhurin MR73 double action revolver chambered in .38 Special/.357 Magnum. According to Wikipedia the GIGN currently uses scoped 8- or 10-inch barreled versions of the MM73 for tactical purposes.
