Peter Lewis, one of the Democracy Alliance’s founding billionaires, has dropped out of the influential liberal donor network...

Lewis, the eccentric and reclusive founder of the insurer Progressive Corp., is one of the biggest donors in Democratic and liberal politics. He invested $25 million in the failed effort to oust President George W. Bush in 2004, making him one of the biggest donors in American political history. He coordinated his giving that year with billionaire George Soros, who gave $50 million.

Every time I see “Flo” on those stupid Progressive ads, I wonder if she has any idea that Peter Lewis sends his horribly excess cash to help fund the wholesale brutal slaughter of the most helpless Americans: the unborn and newly born babies?

And when the Cleveland Indians let this Lewis pig get the naming rights to the stadium, my heart sank.

Sorry, Flo. All I can think of during your commercials is the bloody butchering of our unborn.

Came to his senses?

At his age it would be amazing.

I think it would border on miraculous.

How many Freepers have Insurance and loans through Progressive and it’s 67 subsidiaries? Do they KNOW they are supporting radical Socialism by doing so?

Supporting the Cleveland Indians means you are supporting this trash, as well.

Board Chairman of the Cleveland-based Progressive Insurance Corporation

Major donor to Democrat political candidates and leftist causes

Supports the legalization of marijuana

Close friend of George Soros

In 1999, Hoover’s Handbook of American Business described Lewis in print as “a functioning pot-head

Peter B. Lewis is the current Chairman (and former CEO) of the Progressive Insurance Company, which was co-founded in 1937 by his father, Joseph Lewis. According to Forbes magazine, Peter Lewis today possesses a fortune worth an estimated $1.1 billion. A strong supporter of the Democratic Party and its agendas, Lewis first became active in politics when he served as the Ohio finance chairman for George McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign. “I did it essentially because I hated Richard Nixon,” Lewis recounts. Over the years, Lewis has used his immense wealth to fund a host of leftist political campaigns, organizations, and causes.

Between 2001 and 2006, Lewis contributed $25 million to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Between 1991 and 2003, Lewis gave $5 million specifically to the ACLU’s drug-policy litigation project, which challenges current laws dealing with drug testing in schools and the medicinal use of marijuana. In addition, he made large donations to drug-legalization initiatives in Arizona, Nevada, California, Oregon, Utah, Florida, Maine, and Massachusetts.

In 1999, Hoover’s Handbook of American Business described Lewis in print as “a functioning pot-head.” In 2000, Lewis was arrested after customs agents found 1.7 ounces of marijuana and two ounces of hashish in his luggage at an airport in New Zealand. The charges were dropped when the billionaire, who said he was carrying the drugs for “medicinal purposes,” agreed to make a donation to a drug-rehabilitation center.

The reclusive Lewis does not grant interviews to the press and is rarely photographed. According to a Jane Mayer article in the New Yorker, Lewis “spent much of 2004 discreetly directing millions of dollars to liberal groups allied with the Democratic Party ... while cruising the Mediterranean Sea on his two-hundred-and-fifty foot yacht, Lone Ranger.”

Along with George Soros, Lewis is a key financial supporter of Democracy Alliance and Media Matters for America.

Lewis’ home in Coconut Grove, Florida is decorated with numerous Andy Warhol paintings of the late Communist dictator Mao Zedong.

“functioning pothead”

Lewis was arrested in Auckland, New Zealand in 2000 for importing cannabis resin and leaf. He was visiting New Zealand in the summer of 2000 to watch the America’s Cup when these events transpired. After pleading guilty to three counts and agreeing to give $53,000 to a drug rehabilitation center in Auckland, the Otahuhu District Court discharged him without conviction. His lawyer told the Otahuhu court that Lewis uses marijuana to cope with pain from a partial leg amputation. The partial amputation occurred in 1998.

Controversies

In 2002, the company settled with the State of Georgia in a class action lawsuit over diminished value claims brought by policyholders.

In 2007, the company apologized after it was revealed they hired private investigators to infiltrate a church group and pose as congregation members to collect information on litigants seeking redress from the company. Another lawsuit was filed by the litigants over the affair against the company for invasion of privacy and fraud.

In 2009, the company was sued for allegedly deceiving policyholders by employing illegally-operated, unlicensed body shops to make repairs on vehicles for their clients in order to save money. The class action lawsuit of Blue Ash Auto Body Inc. v. Progressive Insurance is pending in Ohio.
