Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A Las Vegas resident took matters into his own hands by fatally shooting a possible intruder on Tuesday morning.
It happened around 9:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of Spurs Court, near Sahara Avenue and Hualapai Way on the far west side of town.
The victim was shot in the back yard of a home. Police believe the victim had no right to be on the property and did not know the resident who fired the shots.
The resident called 911 and claims to have shot in self defense.
People who live nearby say this is the last thing they expected to happen in their quiet neighborhood.
"You're talking nine in the morning, in broad daylight," said Stacy Hawkins. "This is an upscale neighborhood. It proves it can happen anywhere. It's kind of scary. It definitely makes you think."
The incident has prompted many residents to question their own safety, and the protective measures they have in place at their homes.
Bob Irwin, the owner of The Gun Store, says things like this typically cause an increase in gun sales.
"People realize how vulnerable they are, and want to have a gun in the house to protect themselves," Irwin says. "It's a normal reaction to crime."
"If somebody comes after me, with the intent to harm me or my family, I want to be able to protect myself and the ones I love," says Ned Barnett. "That's all I care about. That's why I'm here looking for a pistol to keep at home."
Irwin says gun sales are already up 31 percent over the same time last year.
Just added a Remington 12 gauge to the “home defense arsenal” previously occupied by pistols only (Ruger.357 magnum, .40 cal Glock, two .45 cal Glocks, S&W .38).

The video has a bit more information. The homeowner says the man was breaking into his house.
I see it as the house breaker took matters into his hands by breaking into an armed citizen's house. Mode of death: Suicide by home owner. I see the home owner as having no reasonable alternative.
Anyone noticing that this is happening more and more frequently with the same results?
I think the second amendment should be used as one of our 2012 campaign pieces. Basically, it works and gun control as preached by the left doesn’t.
I would open it up as another front in the war on our freedom’s. Use Obama’s “we are taking the backdoor approach to gun control” narrative against him.
The intruder thrust the matter into the hands of the resident, he didn't "take" anything. "Take" makes it sound like the shooter took something that did not belong to him.
Why wear a “hoodie” at nine in the morning in broad daylight in (warm) Florida? To keep from being ID’d, of course. I’d think “up to no good” as well, though I’d probably not be as quick to shoot.

Home Invasion robberies are becoming more and more common up here in the Seattle area. The reason I believe is home security systems. When you are away and it is turned on they have little time to go through your home before Police respond. While you are at home, the alarm is off, and if they can subdue you, or do their work while you are occupied someplace else in the house, they have all the time in the world to go through each room and closet, not missing a thing.
Read the follow up article from the local media. The Killee, Demarcus Carter had just been released from jail in February for robbery and a bunch of other property-related crimes, and he had a rap sheet as long as your arm! He brought on his own demise by his actions.
