Ann Romney, wife of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, said Wednesday she laughed when she first heard that actor Robert De Niro had used her name in a controversial joke.
I took it for what it was: a joke, Romney said on CNNs Piers Morgan Tonight. We take everything so seriously.
Earlier in the day, De Niro apologized for making the quip at a fundraiser for President Barack Obamas re-election campaign. At the event, De Niro mentioned Ann Romney, as well as Callista Gingrich and Karen Santorum, then asked: Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?
Newt Gingrich quickly fired off on De Niro, calling on the president to apologize for his supporters remarks. The Obama campaign followed up saying the comment was inappropriate.
But Ann Romney was all smiles Wednesday night talking about De Niro and arguing that people need to be less serious.
Were all overreacting to so many things and making things so difficult, which means we have to watch every single word that comes out of our mouth. We cant be spontaneous. We cant be funny.
She continued: Ill tell you, in politics the fastest way to get in trouble is make a joke. So I think Robert De Niro just learned that.
She also pointed to what she described as another, more recent overreaction: The frenzy over a comment made by one of her husbands advisers Wednesday, comparing the campaign to an Etch A Sketch drawing toy that Romney could shake up and start all over again in the fall.

In the PC media world everything is inappropriate unless Obama or any other dimocrat says it.
I have heard she is an asset to Romney, but I was not impressed with the small segment I saw of her speaking on FOX.
In this clip she was praising women for paying attention to the economy. (Well, DUH!) She was rallying “women” to continue to pay attention to the economy (Double, DUH!).
It seemed as if she thought the “women” she was speaking to were the brainless twits.
Something about her affect gave me the impression of someone trying to empower a group of people she has no use for, other than their votes.
Might be unfair, but just my 2 cents.
Like a lamb defending the butcher.
She has no clue what’s at stake. This is not about jokes or free speech. It’s hypocrisy.
The left thinks it can say anything while the right has to live in a MMFA Police State.
Now that the left is getting a taste of the MMFA medicine, in steps RINOs like Ann Romney to tell the Right to stop pointing out hypocrisy.
Lady, who are you kidding? Your plastic pod-person husband couldn’t buy a sense of humor or a personality with all of his AND his daddy’s money.
I’m sorry, I know this woman is ill and I’m sorry for that, but I just don’t like her face. Flame if you must.
I like this Ann Romney person - even her speeches are better than her husband’s.
Im not Mitt fan, but I like Ann.
One morning, Ann woke up with numbness on her right side and severe exhaustion. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Suddenly she couldnt take care of herself. Her condition worsened rapidly; she was hospitalized and began intravenous steroid treatment, which, along with alternative therapies, ultimately stalled the progression of her disease. She insisted upon following Mitt to Salt Lake City in the spring of 1999, though fearing that the MS might soon incapacitate her. So despite the MS, she decided to take up horseback riding as therapy. To start, she couldnt even make it one lap around the ring. But she was determined to ride and do it correctly. She never made excuses. The riding helped her gain back core strength and balance. By 2000, Ann was competing in first level Dressage on borrowed horses, and the next year advanced to fourth level. She moved up to Prix St. Georges in December 2001. During the spring of 2006, she fulfilled her dream of competing at Grand Prix.
