In the James Madison monument controversy [Letters, Monument Muddle, Winter 2011], the important thing is not at all anything about some stones (or whatever); it is the marvel that we are still honoring authors of the disastrous Constitution that some Virginians wrote in the 18th century and which is going to inevitably wreck the United States.
These Southern gentlemen thought they knew everything that would be valid forever and that nothing should ever be changed. It shows: In 220-plus years, only three amendments of significance have ever been made while Southerners were sitting in the Congress. The three we got through when they were out were of course amendments 1315. The three of significance when they were in attendance were 16, 19, and 24. All the rest were merely procedural or reversed, and of no essential importance.
Today, with the Southerners, Midwesterners (my home area), the Westerners, and the Alaskans (and plenty of know-nothings elsewhere, too) firmly in authority and powered by uneducated and sad people watching television, there is no hope whatsoever of amending the Constitution, though only a small minority, about 13 percent, now rule.
It is essentially all over, and all we need to do now is watch it play out.
Dennis K. McDaniel Washington, D.C.
I notice that the jackass who wrote this didn't say what specifically he objected to in the constitutions -
“it is the marvel that we are still honoring authors of the disastrous Constitution that some Virginians wrote in the 18th century and which is going to inevitably wreck the United States.”
He is aware other states were represented, too, isn’t he? I mean, it wasn’t all the South. Notice how, horrible though it is to this Yankee’s sensibilities, southerners were the only ones to ever secede from it. Or try to secede from it, anyway.
By the way, why is this guy so focused on amending the Constitution? That is so pre-New Deal. The feds do as they will. Get with the times.
I suspect that there is very little that the moron who wrote this IS aware of.
You what CW-II, McDaniel?
Bring it, Obamahole.
We’ve had it.
Let’s get this over with.
What?
My reaction too.
Pretty ignorant drivel for someone who cannot recognize the most liberating document in the history of human existence...or he CAN recognize that...and is worried a couple a Supremes might have read it...and GASP!!! torpedo ObamaCare or some such
Of course this leftard hates the constitution, the few remaining shreds of if that are still there are all that is holding back any of the progressive agenda.
Astounding. Not surprising, but astounding.

This guy called President Eisenhower “evil” and a “butcher”, so that gives you some idea of where this idiot’s head is at.
I agree with McDaniel’s final sentiment, but not his reasoning.
Even Franklin had doubts about whether this system of government could work. ‘Only on a moral people’. He also pointed out that as soon as we figured out that we could vote ourselves any largesse we wanted at the expense of everyone else, it would be over.
It’s true, as we know it today, its over.
Every other functioning democracy saw that the flaw with ours were the terms of office. Every other democracy rules as a coalition. In that sort of system, Obama may not have lasted his first year.
Instead, he’s had four years to damage the country, advancing his agenda by fiat through the EO system. We’ve amended the Constitution through the Supreme Court so many times that it is, in fact, not recognizable. They’ve used the 14th to drive a truck over most of it.
Abortion became law of the land through ‘penumbras and emanations’ from the 14th. It’s funny he’s taking credit for that one. The 17th changed the way Senators went to Congress. I, for one, would be much happier having Senators picked by Governors, rather than elected.
Everyone wonders why the ruling class in DC breaks out in laughter every time someone brings up the 10th Amendment and states’ rights. As long as people are picking the Senate, the legislative checks on government power are gone. When governors did the picking, the idea was, “Hold the line, especially on unfunded mandates!!”
Now, instead of reps passing out gold to the masses, the Senate is elbowing the reps out of the way to get there first.
This guy is COMPLETELY correct. A coalition style government with a lot of the lovely features provided in our Constitution (rule of law, private property rights - all brand new things bestowed on us by the Document). He’s using hyperbole in describing it as ‘disastrous’, but both Jefferson and Franklin had their doubts as to whether we wouldn’t game this toward greedy ends, despite the fact the Founders took greed and self-interest into account in writing it.
Here’s the problem: Does anyone trust anybody in Congress to come up with something new?
“...with something new”
that “something new” thing is awaiting the action of We the People...”
I’m going to comment on my own comment, because something just hit me which underlines all of this:
Have you noticed lately that it is the Reps, especially the new Republicans elected in the last four to six years, that are the cooler, more deliberative legislators? Paul Ryan is the undisputed adult on the Hill right now, with all the ankle biters (including Santorum) criticizing what is an outstanding start on a multi-decade effort.
It’s the Senators who have become the real problem patients in the asylum of late, hiding their meds under their tongues and spitting their pills out at the first MSM camera that will point a lens at them. They have less discipline than the monkeys flinging poo at the kids at the zoo.
It’s a clown car - even on our side of the aisle. I trust Lieberman more than I do McConnell on national security stuff right now, and what does that say? Boehner is SUPPOSED to have a difficult job. He’s supposed to be a camp counsellor. McConnell? I doubt he could tell you what the 17th Amendment was, and I’m positive if he had his way he wouldn’t change it if he could.
Brennan: I smoked pot with Johnny Hopkins.
Nancy: You don't know anyone named Johnny Hopkins.
Brennan: It was Johnny Hopkins and Sloan Kettering. And they were blazing that shit up every day.
Actually, the South didn't secede from the Union of the Constitution -- they seceded from people who thought like this guy. They took the Constitution with them, by and large and very nearly "lick for lick".
This guy is just another Eastern megalopolitan elitist manifesting his primal rage that, drowning in his own insignificance, he cannot live out his fantasies of being Stalin.
Bless his heart.
