U.S. delays drilling off Virginia's coast to at least 2017

Offshore drilling has been pushed further onto Virginia's horizon.

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar on Tuesday announced the oil and gas leasing plan for 2012-2017, and Virginia did not make the list.

The proposed program includes 15 potential lease sales, with 12 in the Gulf of Mexico and three off Alaska.

Virginia's lease sale was scheduled for 2011, but the federal government delayed it until at least 2017 after the April-July 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the worst offshore spill in U.S. history.

Gov. Bob McDonnell, who wanted to use the millions that a sale could generate to finance transportation improvements, among other things, blasted the decision as "another glaring example of the abysmal failure of the Obama administration to develop a comprehensive national energy policy."

"There is a burgeoning energy-exploration industry, hundreds of millions of dollars in new capital investment, and thousands of new jobs at stake if Virginia is not allowed to pursue its innovative and comprehensive energy strategy," he said.

A number of considerations were involved in Salazar's decision not to include lease sales in the Atlantic, "including the current lack of infrastructure to support oil and gas exploration and development, as well as spill preparedness and response," according to the Interior Department.

Further, it said issues remain regarding potential conflicts with military uses.

McDonnell looked to Congress, urging members to pass the Virginia Outer Continental Shelf Energy Production Act of 2011 introduced by Sens. Mark R. Warner and Jim Webb, and legislation that passed the House of Representatives and was intended to jump-start drilling off Virginia's coast.

That’s ok, China will just move a few rigs in and sell it to us.

Could Salazar come up with any more excuses. He’s concerned about “oil spills”? How many off shore oil spills have occurred? One to my knowledge.

Are you kidding me? Are you effing kidding me?!?!

Perhaps the support systems don't exist because there is nothing to support.

The absolute stupidity of gubment never ceases to amaze me. They must be removed. They must be destroyed.

This is unpossible; my president told me that we’re drilling like never before! The Times-Dispatch must have it wrong.

The development of which, generally speaking, would FOLLOW approval of the sale of leases. It would be considered the proverbial cart before the horse if these amenities did exist, would it not, Mr. Secretary?

I have the perfect solution to the energy crisis; in exchange for paying for susie flukes contraception, we get to harness the energy from her trysts..

I have a serious question I hope some of you with specific knowledge of the subject can answer. When the topic of opening new offshore leases to drilling comes up, the liberal answer is that the oil companies already have a huge number of leased properties that aren't being drilled and they don't need new ones.

When that comes up in debates I don't have a ready answer as to why those leases are lying idle. Can anyone give me a good, solid explanation?

Generally speaking, it would seem that he hasn’t a clue as to how the drilling process works. It truly is unfortunate and sad that such incompetent nincompoops are involved, let alone be in charge.
