President Barack Obama weighed in on the "tragedy" of Trayvon Martin's death last week, saying it is "absolutely imperative" that all levels of government investigate "every aspect" of how the unarmed boy was shot.
"I can only imagine what these parents are going through," Obama said, adding "When I think about this boy I think about my own kids."
"I am glad that not only is the Justice Department is looking into this, but the Governor of the State of Florida has put together a task force [to investigate the case]," Obama said. Obama carefully avoided any discussion of George Zimmerman, the man who shot Martin, and has controversially avoided arrest under Florida's "Stand Your Ground" self-defense laws.
"My main message is to the parents: If I had a son he'd look like Trayvon. I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves."

In this country you are innocent until proven guilty, the police have looked into this, they have interviewed people who saw the incident and have took actions which comply with the law.
When in my state someone is on top of you hitting you then you have every right to defend yourself and if that means shooting him then so be it.

Outrage at the police is justified. They even initially reported that Zimmerman was white. His father had to step in to say his son was Hispanic.
There are probably 5 times more private security personnel in this country than there are police officers--armed homeowners with shotguns, security guards, private detectives, bounty hunters, neighborhood watch groups, internet watchdog groups--yet these types of incidents don't seem to happen with the same regularity as with the police.

We do know that the Sanford police, "conducted a complete and fair investigation of this incident. We have provided the results of our investigation to the Office of the State Attorney for their review and consideration for possible criminal prosecution.:
We also know that did not arrest Zimmerman. Why? According to the police,
"When the Sanford Police Department arrived at the scene of the incident, Mr. Zimmerman provided a statement claiming he acted in self defense which at the time was supported by physical evidence and testimony. By Florida Statute, law enforcement was PROHIBITED from making an arrest based on the facts and circumstances they had at the time. Additionally, when any police officer makes an arrest for any reason, the officer MUST swear and affirm that he/she is making the arrest in good faith and with probable cause. If the arrest is done maliciously and in bad faith, the officer and the City may be held liable.
According to Florida Statute 776.032:
776.032 Immunity from criminal prosecution and civil action for justifiable use of force.—
(1) A person who uses force as permitted in s. 776.012, s. 776.013, or s. 776.031 is justified in using such force and is immune from criminal prosecution and civil action for the use of such force, unless the person against whom force was used is a law enforcement officer, as defined in s. 943.10(14), who was acting in the performance of his or her official duties and the officer identified himself or herself in accordance with any applicable law or the person using force knew or reasonably should have known that the person was a law enforcement officer. As used in this subsection, the term “criminal prosecution” includes arresting, detaining in custody, and charging or prosecuting the defendant.
(2) A law enforcement agency may use standard procedures for investigating the use of force as described in subsection (1), but the agency may not arrest the person for using force unless it determines that there is probable cause that the force that was used was unlawful.
Of course there are racist people here. There are racist people everywhere. But this is not a racist website nor does it mean that anyone who posts here is racist.

From the little I know about this case it was not motivated by racism. It was motivated by an overzealous neighborhood watch captain or something.

Those here who suggest that there may be people on this thread who--by letting their emotions temporarily get the best of them--instinctively assume the worst about Martin, are not loathsome.
