EXIF (Exchangeable Image File) data is camera/scene info that's encoded within .jpg, .tiff, and .raw images shot with a digital camera.

The link above gives a really good short explanation.

The point being that the exif info can be a good starting point for verifying image authenticity.
Items like 'created date' or 'last modified date' can be helpful in checking if a time frame fits, and some (most?) image hosting sites can also read the URL of the originating post.

Disclaimer: I've read just enough about all this to be dangerous, but there are plenty of FReepers way expert in the subject (swampsniper springs to mind) should you wish to pic their brain about it.

For example, of the two pics posted here of the facebook postings of two individuals purported to be T.Martin, part of the exif info for the first/top pic is below, but the exif info for the second/lower pic has been stripped out of the image (there are apps that can do that), leaving its provenance in much doubt.
