I am not question the scenario you are describing or its legality (who knows what it is in my crazy state), though I do question lots of other things in this case, among them a naive question of how do you coolly reach for a gun, aim and fire when you are being beaten to a pulp? Was then a struggle for the gun perhaps?
Really? You know Mr. Zimmerman did all this, was "cool" while he "aimed" the gun?
What's to say he wasn't in a full blown panic while realizing he was getting the crap beat out of him?

The Police have already said there is a lot of infortmation that hasn't been released to the public. What we do know is that the weapon and holster were located on his waistband. That was reported by Officer Smith who was there on the scene.
Aiming isn't too much of a problem with someone at point blank range, and one doesn't cooly need to reach for something when after a few seconds of being knocked around, you realize that some relief is at your fingertips. The desire to stop the puches by covering your face isn't as great as the desire to end it by reaching for your weapon.
None of us know enough about the details to form an opinion as to how it might have played out in real time.
I would expect there was a struggle for the gun. The gun only fired the round in the chamber. The magazine was full. I would expect Trayvon’s hand to be slightly cut by the slide if he was trying to take the gun away.
If Trayvon’s hand was cut, Zimmerman saved Trayvon from committing a federal felony, the possession of a gun while under age.
