NBC: Santorum Wins La. Primary By Significant Margin

By Michael O'Brien Rick Santorum’s campaign netted a victory Saturday night in Louisiana, where NBC News projected he’d won that state’s GOP primary by a significant margin. The win sparks hope of a campaign rebound, following Santorum’s lopsided losses to Mitt Romney in the Illinois and Puerto Rico primaries.
The former Massachusetts governor finished second and Newt Gingrich third in Tuesday’s contest, per NBC.
The political terrain in Louisiana was favorable to the former Pennsylvania senator. Saturday’s vote was limited to Republicans only, making the electorate more conservative. And Santorum has a record of performing well with that demographic, particularly among born-again and evangelical Christians -- his wins Alabama and Missippi included.
Of the GOP pack, Santorum had campaigned most aggressively in Louisiana. Twenty of the state’s 46 delegates are stake, with NBC assigning 7 to Santorum as of 9 p.m. ET.
Any netted delegates by Santorum might assist in eroding Romney’s advantage in the delegate count. But more importantly, a Santorum win would hit pause on the former Massachusetts governor's ability to grab a stranglehold on the race to the nomination.

Newt 17%

So unless there is a BIG difference in the other 44% of the vote, possible with Orleans all out, Newt will win nothing for himself but he'll win delegates for Mitt at the expense of Rick by holding Rick under 50%. Great strategy by the Newtered!
Romney reintroduces himself every time he opens his mouth. Doing it one more time wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary.
I think any candidate who gets at least 25% gets some delegates.
I thought only about half of Louisiana’s delegates are awarded by primary with the other half awarded in caucuses to come. Can anyone confirm this?
With 62% of the vote counted Santorum is getting 50%; Romney is getting 26% and Gingrich (zero delegates) is securing 17%. La should be the knock-out blow for Gingrich and it would then be a one-on-one race to the finish although admittedly its a very steep and uphill task for Santorum. If Romney drops to under 25% he gets zero delegates.
It’s time for a new Romney to emerge, as soon as one can be invented.
With 82% of the vote Rick is at 49.7%, only 467 votes short of 50% and has closed that margin with the last two updates. This is less than Bachmann’s total.
With what CNN and Fox call 98% (Huffington Post calls it 94.6%) of the vote in Rick is at 49.2%, 1431 votes short of 50%. Had Buddy Roemer’s 1.1% voted all for Rick he’d have gotten over half. Had the assortment of Others, including Roemer, that the HP listed (USA today has breakdown but is reporting slower) just stayed home and never voted Rick would have crossed 50%. Had 6% of Newt’s voters switched to Rick he’d have been over half. Yet Romney will win delegates.
Or if Newt could have taken a mere 10% extra votes and gotten them all from Mitt then Mitt would have been held below the 25% line and been ineligible for delegates, leaving all to Rick by default.
I thought McCain was endorsing ... OK, nevermind. It’s McCain. Of course he stabbed him in the back.

They leave Santorum 1,889 votes short of 50%, that's less than Buddy Roemer's total and just 6.37% of Newt's total. Had the voters for places 5-9 just stayed home instead of raising the denominator, Santorum would have won 50.12% of the tota,l amongst the top four. Had Santorum exceeded 50% he'd have won all the delegates; as it is he splits them with Romney in some way. Candidates winning less than 25% get none. Newt needed a lot more votes to win delegates, but had he taken 3,153 votes more from Romney he'd have disqualified Mitt from any delegates.
29% in Alabama to 16% in Louisiana is the right direction?

Santorum will get 0 from DC as he didn’t even get on the ballot.
