problem is, they mostly view their political CAREERS as more important than doing the business that they were elected to do

Assuming that is true, they won't have much of a career. Who will vote for them? Those who want favors can get more from the Dems, and tea partiers will have little reason to vote for them. But they will get that congressional pension, if nothing else.
