While his art was liberal tripe, the reason for his arrest seems a bit screwy. He copped to a plea of destroying evidence? Evidence of copyright infringement? WTF?

That famous Hope poster is based on an Associated Press photograph and they are suing them.

I think that's the current case, but he's had other arrests for graffiti vandalism, and copyright suits are to be expected when your "art" involves appropriating images created by other people -- images of still other people who also didn't give their permission.

A troubled (middle-aged) boy. His father's name is Frank Strait Fairey, and he goes by F. Strait Fairey. Young Fairey must have been teased mercilessly in school.
