Breaking: Gingrich replaces campaign manager, lays off 1/3 of staff — to focus on the convention

Clearly it's his campaign manager and the staff who are the problem.

Alternate headline: “Gingrich finally approaching the fifth stage of grief.”

It’s largely a strategy of necessity: The former House Speaker is a distant third in delegates, behind Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. His campaign-finance report for February, released last week, showed more debt ($1.55 million) than cash on hand ($1.54 million).

DeSantis said the former Speaker will continue to visit states with primaries, but will have a less intense campaign schedule. DeSantis promised that the campaign will be “more positive and ideas-focused,” eschewing attacks on Republican rivals. The aide said the campaign will be more digital, focusing on low-cost communications tools, including informational videos, social media and the web…

DeSantis elaborated on the announcement in an email: “Newt 2012 is transitioning into an organization appropriate for winning a big choice convention. This big choice convention phase will be focused on two goals. 1. Affecting the national dialogue to show that Gingrich is the most capable of defeating Obama, by leading on issues that put the president on defense – like Newt’s $2.50 Gas Plan; and 2. A parallel communications strategy directly to the delegates…

“Furthermore, the fact is the more than a million more people have voted against Mitt Romney than for him. We believe that if Governor Romney is unable to secure 1144 by the last primaries, he will be unable to do so at the convention where the vast majority of the delegates are conservative. That creates and environment at the convention where Gingrich can emerge as the one candidate who can unite social, economic and national security conservatives (a fact which is borne out by polling).”

Like I said in the earlier Gingrich post, that last paragraph is pure fantasy. If you’ve reached the point in a convention floor fight where, for whatever reason, both Romney and Santorum are deemed unacceptable, why wouldn’t you roll the dice on a dark horse outsider? You’re much better off with someone like Christie or Paul Ryan who’s young, appealing, superb on the seminal issue of fiscal reform, and yet to have their national image defined than you are with High-Negatives Newt. Passing over the guy with the most delegates and the guy with the second-most delegates means you’re thinking way out of the box on the nomination, which means there’s no reason to limit your choice to the people who are running. Although I guess choosing someone who hasn’t held elective office since the 90s and who can’t seem to win anywhere except his home state and the state next door would qualify as “way out of the box.” Way, way out.

I don’t know, guys. I’m starting to think maybe he really believes in this ludicrous convention idea. What other explanation is there? Exit question: Why on earth would he cite Romney’s vote total as relevant to the delegates’ calculus when Newt himself is much closer to Ron Paul’s total than to Romney’s?

What does his taxes have to do with anything.

Everything - he said he was going home to do his taxes and SHOW THEM. Not trustworthy - like his record shows.

The only reason they came up is because the media was whining about it a couple months ago

WRONG! The other candidates showed them - what is he hiding? What is it? He won't show them because HE KNOWS he won't be the nominee and be open for a major vetting? The plan is to keep anyone away from Mitt and he's duping voters to do just that!

We all know you hate Rick

Give up your victim talk, how pathetic! Just like the media and everything is hate and proven wrong! Santorum is a light weight, no 'know how', no skills to lead this country. His supporters, the media driven voters, are not capable of seeing this. He's already tried and convicted Zimmerman without knowing any facts - and his supporters are the same, they don't know HIS FACTS!

It's my America, too, and Patriots LOVE AMERICA and NEWT is the proven man for the job.

Not as disgusting as Santo pandering to the race baiters with his absurd attack on Zimmerman. Is he running as a far left Dem?

If it goes to the convention, I am waiting to see a Gingrich/Palin ticket to take it all. They would be amazing on the campaign trail.

I really don’t care what you think of Rick if you haven’t figured it out already. Vote Romney. He seems to stack up better for you out of the two candidates left in this fight.

BTW, Rick did release his taxes. Four years worth which is the most any candidate running has done. Apparently you don’t know what you are talking about.

I am sure an apology is forthcoming from an honest and fact based person like yourself.

I'm not voting for either - Mitt or his buddy, Rick. They can take this country down with their buddy deal but never on my vote. They are relying on voters to compromise - compromise AMERICA for their gain. I'm not one of them.

I thought you said his taxes didn't matter and then you find them and all of a sudden....

Apparently you don’t know what you are talking about.

Apparently I DO!! SEE, I knew it and wanted you to prove my point. It didn't matter when you didn't know. Like everything else about him - it doesn't matter until....

I am sure an apology is forthcoming from an honest and fact based person like yourself.

Now you look foolish. Let's put it this way, Santorum isn't the only one who can dupe people/voters. :)

When will you be looking for an apology from him - the one you see as honest and fact based but lies through his teeth about Newt? Before or after he throws his support behind Mitt AGAIN. The FIRST time you didn't learn.

Typical Team Santorum reasoning...

I said his taxes didn’t matter and they don’t. I added that bit of info on him releasing them after you said Rick has something to hide. Do you actually look back at the stuff you are posting to me or do you just throw as many discredited talking points from the Newt crowd as you can in one post and hope I get confused. I will admit, after reading that last incoherent post, I am thoroughly confused.

“Apparently I DO!! SEE, I knew it and wanted you to prove my point. It didn’t matter when you didn’t know. Like everything else about him - it doesn’t matter until.... “

Let me get this straight, because you pushed an issue on and on and I finally gave you the correct info to shut down your lies, you were right all along because you always knew Rick had released his taxes but you were really using super secret double whammy logic you learned in the Caribbean to show I was not a Rick supporter? OK then. I will leave you to yourself now to mutter in the corner. I think most who read this thread will see who’s argument hold water. See you around next time you spin off the rails slamming Rick with out any facts or logic.

Get this straight. Your candidate made a promise months ago, you had no idea if he kept it or not - it didn’t matter to you. NOTHING MATTERS to you what your candidate HAS DONE in the past or is doing. Nor all the lies he has told.

Now I’m done with you - cluelessness reigns with Rick supporters.

You sir are a straight up liar. I did know. Everyone knew. I had said clearly that I did not care so I did not pursue it any further. Your repeated badgering on the topic made me shut you down with an actual article on it.

And since when do you LIARS bother you?

Might be true. We don’t know yet. He did seem to be very insecure and rather self important. Being a cop, but not a cop. Kinda weird. Calling 911 over 50 times....who does that? I wonder how many calls were accurate. Any arrests? Any saves? How many people died because he was using 911 for his social life? Lots of stuff yet to be investigated.

As far as Santorum goes, you either get on board with him or you are stuck with Romney, bottom line. You may not like Santorum, but he is better than Romney.

I’m holding out for the brokered convention regardless of how insane that may sound.

It’s not a question of “not liking Rick”. He is indeed a good guy.

Who does it? Someone on a neighborhood watch. Why don't you KNOW that! It's even in the news. You are looking very hard to come up with something you know NOTHING about. Just like Santorum - shooting off his mouth while knowing NO FACTS and no desire to know them first simply to be rather self important.

I don't get on board with LIARS, Rick or his friend Mitt. America is going down with his 'doing it for the team'. Voters never learn and AMERICA suffers. "She" can't take anymore, "she" gave us her BEST but voters didn't give THE BEST back to protect her!

After this thread, I am hoping for a brokered convention too. Too many FREEPERS are beginning to suddenly like the idea of voting for Romney. I just hope that Rick can at least win Wisconsin because he definitely won’t win DC or Maryland. (I know he is not on the ballot in DC, but he would have lost their anyway and big). I am afraid that if Romney has a trifecta on Tuesday, it will be over. Horrible thought but I just have that terrible feeling deep down in my stomach.

Someone on a neighborhood watch.

He was the ONLY one part of it. I don’t call that a neighborhood watch. We have one here in my neighborhood and there are ALWAYS at least 3 people walking together and have shifts with different people. This guy was a one-man show.

Guess what, it's not up to you to decide what something is on your limited knowledge.

God bless Rick Santorum...and please help him to contain his gutter mouth. Combined with his holier than thou attitude, it’s prone to give Christians a bad name.

Keep hope alive Newt. This country needs your mind and ideas more than ever.

Oh by the way, Bramps. Your Savior just all be endorsed Mittens. Are you happy now?

And I was standing right there when Rick talked to the reporter. Saying “B**lshit” is gutter mouth? LOL

He is a great candidate and the only Conservative in the race who can beat Obama.

Your Newt fanclub is about at a membership of two now: you and him.

Laz: Pay no attention to the Santorum haters. They have no message or core. They are just bitter, angry sore losers.
You’re wasting your time and energy to try to engage with them.
