Turns out no one in any state matched all six numbers that were drawn in Tuesday night's massive Mega Millions drawing, so the jackpot will be growing even more massive — to a record-breaking $476 million, according to the New Jersey Lottery, the Pennsylvania Lottery and the official Mega Millions lottery website.

I would donate $1 Million to Obama 2012 if he, during a nationally televised speech, sang (and danced) “I’m a Little Teapot” with two caveats: 1) he can’t use a teleprompter to remind him of the words, and 2) he can’t tell his audience why he’s doing it—that would be cheating!

WMAL Radio news (12:00 ET) just reported that Maryland lottery officials are saying the MegaMillions jackpot just hit $1/2 billion.

[It will be more, probably, by the time of the drawing.]

The Lottery is a tax on people who are poor at math.

Fooey. The lottery is entertainment, and at a buck a ticket, is cheaper than going to the movies, or buying an ice cream cone. I buy one every week, not as an investment, but as a bit of fun. Its all in your perspective.

My favorite is the “1K a week for life”. 38k after taxes. I plan what I would do every time before I start to scratch.

Lottery fever will hit the nation.

Yep. Already over $500 million now. Who knows how high it'll be by Friday night.

A half a billion dollars. That's just insane. All my old problems would disappear but I'd have a whole bunch brand new ones!

...I switched my 6 numbers to Mega Millions and quit playing PB.

I had a habit of buying a single $1 ticket for PB whenever the prize went over $100 million. I have not bought a single ticket since it went to $2. I'm curious if the change to $2 tickets is helping or hurting their bottom line.

So it would make sense to buy up every possible combination...

The problem with this plan is you have no guarantee that one or more other tickets with the winning number will be sold.

Should have said “will NOT be sold.”

I make you all a deal.

If I win, I'll set up a fully funded trust to pay Freerepublic's operating expenses out of. So none of us will have to put up with quarterly fundraisers ever again.

The odds are 500 times greater than if you bought just one ticket.

Nope.

Its not my one ticket against your 500.

Its my one ticket against 175,000,000, and your 500 against 175,000,000.

Again, statistically insignificant.

But, hey, its a semi-free country, do what you like...

An elderly neighbor suggested that all taxes be replaced with a voluntary lottery.

Think about the freedom to choose rather than being forced to subsidize the loose, the lazy and the liberals.

People who are anti-gambling would not be required to participate.

Lotteries could be daily, weekly or monthly and pay-out(s) could be capped (i.e. $100Million) excess revenues would go into the Treasury.

Revenues would pay for education, highways and public safety. NOTHING ELSE!!!!

All useless Federal Departments and regulatory agencies such as the IRS could be abolished.

Lotteries = Liberty;)

While on my way to the store this morning for groceries, I happened to listen to the news. Top story was the big jackpot. In the second half of the story, they asked some mathematician from some college back East about the odds of winning.

He said your odds of getting in a fatal auto accident while on the way to buy the ticket were better.

Mrs. Hoagy62 says it best: Just throw the ticket money out the window as you drive by the 7-Eleven. It'll have just about the same result.

(That being said...I don't think there's anyone out there who hasn't fantasized about what they'd do if they got a hold of that much money. I know I have.)

“The Lottery is a tax on people who are poor at math.”

But to the people that win they think that math is great!
