I went to Best Buy to purchase a smart phone and couldn't get waited on. So, I went down the street to CompUSA where I was instantly assisted.

I'm a big CompUSA fan here, even if I have to drive a few miles. They have excellent, informed staff with a great attitude, and (at least here) they've managed to retain some of that "magical feeling" of the old computer revolution. :)

Doesn’t Best Buy have a re-stocking fee?

Another turn-off for potential customers.

I remember when my son got a part-time job at a Radio Shack, he was amazed to see people (mostly older people) walk into a store to buy things that could be had for almost half that price at online outlets like Tom's Hardware, NewEgg, Amazon, etc.

A few weeks ago I needed a new battery for my laptop. It would have cost over $90 from Radio Shack. I bought one on EBay for about $30.

If you’re tired of “obscene gas prices”, why don’t you drill your own oil well and oil refinery to avoid such “obscene prices”. Alternatively, you can become a “speculator” and take physical delivery on the contracts.

Now contrast that with Best Buy. I once called aside one of their Geek Squad agents to ask if a certain power supply they were selling had one or multiple 12v rails. The guy had no clue what I was talking about.

I do computer work and make probably twice as much as a dedicated BB sales employee and I am not exactly sure what your complaining about. I don't mean to be rude, but who cares about the internal workings of a desktop computer power supply when they cost around $50 dollars?

You must not do any work on high-end rigs or you’d realize that quality power supplies cost a LOT more than $50, especially to a perfectionist who values high efficiency.

Best Buy carries a decent selection of mid-range Corsair PSUs, many of which are priced above $50. The model I was looking at, a Corsair TX750W, cost $120. If I’m going to invest that kind of money in a part, I expect a salesman to be able to answer general questions about it. I expect a specialist to be able to answer specialized questions. The Geek Squad guy didn’t even know what a power supply rail -was-.

I ended up buying it out of necessity. At the time, my Seasonic PSU had kicked the bucket and I needed something to replace it while waiting for a warranty replacement. The closest Micro Center is over 2 hours away and I didn’t have time to make the trip.

I have to wonder if there won’t be a market at some point for a manufacturer’s showcase of goods type storefront operation. Rent companies space to show off their goods, they put samples in so people can touch them, buy online from the net retailer of their choice.

I agree. I have aMicro near me like them way better than best buy.

I’ve only been to Best Buy about 4 times.

For reasons I can’t explain I always found it a depressing place and couldn’t wait to get out of the store.

Strange,but true.

I thought they went belly up about 3 years ago?

Nope. In fact CompUSA is the only company I allow to send ads to my email box. The other day I bought a nice 64-bit, 6-core computer from them for about $350, and I'm really loving that thing.

Bought my Samsung phone from them as well. I don't mind paying a little extra for the nice value they bring to the table (although it's hard to imagine a better deal than this computer I just got).
