When my sons were at Jesuit many of their classmates fulfilled their service requirement by traveling to South America (with chaperones) and spending the summer in primitive villages giving immunizations to poor children (those were the kids who were on a career path in medicine.)

My guess is that there is a considerable difference in expense, nor would anyone assume the liability a child to perform such a task here. I was teaching remedial reading as a teen.

Absolutely! But the guys who got to go were thrilled about it. I wouldn’t have allowed my sons to go, even if I could have afforded it. But the kids who were accepted to that program were thrilled about it. Conditions were primitive.

But, my point is that there were lots of things to do besides picking up garbage, not that there is anything wrong with that. My kids did that in Boy Scouts.

But, the Jesuit seniors helped at summer camps, sports teams, school testing, and I don’t remember what all else. That was in addition to their own part time jobs (for pay), athletic teams, home chores, etc. It was a good program.
