Intruder fatally shot by homeowner in North Bend (WA)
KIRO News ^ | 3/31/12

A 30-year-old man was shot and killed Friday evening after he broke into a North Bend home, according to officials with the King County Sheriff’s Office. The homeowner shot the intruder because the intruder threatened the homeowner and his girlfriend, said officials.

According to Sgt. Cindi West of the King County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal shooting occurred after 11:40 p.m. in the 300 block of Southeast 5th Street when a woman called about a man pounding on her door and windows.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they could not find the man, but they heard a large crash and banging from a nearby house, said officials.

The sheriff’s office said a 46-year-old man and his girlfriend were woken up by the sound of glass breaking. The intruder broke a sliding glass door to enter their home.

West said while the couple hid locked themselves in a bedroom and spoke with a 911 operator, the intruder continued to threaten them.

According to West, the intruder was yelling, "Where are you at? I'm going to kill you."

The man who lived inside of the home retrieved his handgun, according to officials. He told the intruder he had a gun and to get out of his house.

After the intruder kept threatening the homeowner, he knocked the bedroom door down, and the homeowner fired at the intruder, said West.

When deputies arrived at the scene they found the intruder’s body outside of the bedroom.

West said the incident was a clear case of self-defense.

I have to side with your wife about a gun in your home. Be careful what you wish for.

And I still have to argue with my wife why its important to keep a gun in my nightstand.

Keep working on her - I have a .357 on my side and she has a .32 auto on her side. She also carries a Taurus Slim 9mm because it's small enough for her purse and large enough to get a solid grip on.

Years ago, I visited a friend and he had at least one gun hidden, but easy to access in every room of his house. I thought he was nuts. Today, I do the same.

If Obama and his side of the abyss get their way, things will be a bit chaotic for a while and we're prepared to defend the homefront.

"At least you wife will let you keep a gun in the house."

Sheesh, Buddy... The verb "let" is why I'm on my third marriage: this Mrs. Chainmail fully supports all of my decisions, including having a massive collection of home invasion deterrent weapons.

I have to disagree with you, my FRiend - I believe that it is a solemn responsibility of all citizens to be armed and responsible for their own defense. I guess that you have to know yourself but in my view, we all should be working for a solid (and safe) network of protected families able to instantly respond if their home or their neighbor's homes are attacked.

BTW, you should restore your Austin Healey now: they are one of the best classic cars in the world and the parts aren't getting any easier to find. I know - I restored a '58 Morgan 4/4.

Do we have a high school prom photo of the intruder?

I don’t know about the photo, but I am sure he went to church every Sunday, and had straight “A’s” in school.

Just keep it locked up and when the intruder breaks your door down tell him to wait quietly while you figure out how to unlock the safe and retrieve your weapon, it should be very easy as long as you have nerves of steel and ice water in your veins, of course you won’t be shaking in fear so that you can’t even find your own arse with both hands as most of us would be. Keep telling the intruder, “No fair shooting before I get my gun out.” Any decent madman will be glad to wait for you to get ready to shoot back at him.

Or you could think about finding another wife who is more realistic.

By the way, why is it that people who think guns should be locked up never recommend keeping fire extinguishers securely locked away?

Poor guy. I’m sure he went there only looking for skittles and an iced tea.

If you need to be near the Lynnwood-Everett area I would check the town of Snohomish which is not a far drive from either. It’s surprisingly a conservative strong hold in a very liberal area of WA, and it has that small town appeal. You will find bad guys in any town, but not in the numbers you get, the closer you get to the metropolitan areas of Seattle, Lynnwood, and Everett.

We do have a 10 year old son, so my wife does have valid concerns. But we did come to a compromise. I have a bedside gun safe that is unlocked in the evening and all night long, with my car keys inside so I don’t forget to lock it up again when I go to work.

As for wife’s that are afraid to have guns in the house, the real problem is they are afraid of guns. I need to take advice that was given to me. Buy them an easy to shoot 22 and take them out shooting with friends that do have wife’s that shoot, or a gun club that have women members. Seeing other women having fun shooting works wonders. Then once they become comfortable with the 22, buy them something better suited for protection. I’m going to take that approach this summer, letting her shoot my son’s 22LR Cricket.

Oh, and getting her permission to get my son his Cricket? That is another story.

My wife is still arguing against it.

Man up.

You have to let her know two things;
You are responsible for the security of the household.
You will determine the best means to accomplish this.

By the same token there are plenty of other things in the house that my wife has chosen to take responsibility for and I leave her alone with her choices too.

I disagree.

There are many of us who need to keep firearms away from small, curious hands.

There are also many proven biometric safes available. Smart choice.

"I will be moving to the lynnwood area or nearby. North of Seattle . Can you tell me where I should stay clear of? I haven’t found an apt yet."

Take some sound (pun) advice. Take the Edmonds ferry over to Kingston and find yourself a place you can sleep at night. Lynwood is a zoo, and the animals cruise the nearby neighborhoods. My MIL in Edmonds, car broken into in the church parking lot. Her 'gated community' home broken into twice, once at night while she was there.

I never even go to that side of the water unless it's unavoidable.

Keep in mind that criminals often have access to cars, and try to rob/burglarize houses and people at a distance from their domicile.

And if you're going to drive to commit a crime, you might as well drive to a low-crime area where they aren't expecting trouble.

"3 Hispanics crashed through the slider..."

And that's what has been happening more and more. SB1070 (and others) is working. But they're not leaving the US.

" SACRAMENTO — California has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Arizona’s tough immigration law, saying it would drive illegal immigrants into other states.

By The Associated Press Published: March 28, 2012 at 9:36 am

The Arizona law passed two years ago has been largely blocked by court order because of court challenges. Among other things, it makes in a crime to be in the country illegally and to seek work.

The U.S. Supreme Court has scheduled an April 25 hearing and a ruling is expected in June.

The San Francisco Chronicle says California Attorney General Kamala Harris has joined 10 other states in asking that the Arizona law be overturned.

Harris says in documents filed Tuesday that the law exceeds state authority, conflicts with national policy and would drive illegal immigrants into other states."

The perp in this case, I would guess, was on a drug fueled tear. He was believed to have been harassing people at a gas station, then he went from house to house in a residential neighborhood, banging on doors and walls and yelling(*).

(*) Not peeping through the windows and crying through the locks. That was a different guy.
