Not in our district. There are fresh fruit and veggies every day. There is one kind of canned fruit offered—usually applesauce—and at least two kinds of fresh fruits, BESIDES apples, oranges and bananas. There are fresh or steamed veggies or fresh salad (no iceberg allowed) as accompaniment. Right now the students are merely “offered” these and they don’t HAVE to take them. Next year, they will. Besides the government forcing more fruits and veggies, they are only “allowing” one kind of starch to be served per week. So, if there is spaghetti one day, there cannot be a dish with rice or potatoes until the following week. The students are already griping about all the rice and pasta being whole grain.

And, yes, the kids throw it out now anyhow. Is there going to be a lunchroom monitor who stands by the garbage cans to make sure they eat their vegetables? Good grief.

I am in the school quite a bit and am good friends with the food services manager. Even as libby as she is, she is shaking her head at this one. She thinks it is going to be the most wasteful program ever—and the proof will be in the trash cans.

And the taxpayers get to pay for it all. Yippeee!

I guess the feds didn’t hear about the lunch revolt in Los Angeles schools this year when they started forcing them to take “healthy” crap.
