Gingrich: I Can Support Santorum, Talk of Shared Ticket to Stop Romney

There is growing talk that if former House Speaker Newt Gingrich drops out of the race and "suspends" his campaign, he may throw his support behind Rick Santorum in an effort to deny Mitt Romney the GOP nomination.

And, for the moment, Gingrich is not yielding to the slew of establishment endorsements for Mitt Romney.

Gingrich told CBS News' "Face the Nation" Sunday that Romney has no lock on the nomination and the math doesn't show him getting the 1,144 delegates easily to clinch the nomination.

A leading Gingrich campaign official also suggested this weekend that their camp may work with Santorum to stop Romney from getting the nomination as the former House Speaker made clear he could back either Santorum or Romney if they were to win the nomination.

"If Rick Santorum becomes the nominee, I'll help him," Gingrich said. "We are all committed to defeating Barak Obama. We think his re-election would be a disaster for the country."

Yes but many of us believed that GW Bush was a real conservative, so we let some things pass-Santorum likes big government too as an answer, like Bush. I want Newt staying in. Too many people are believing the big lie; electability which Romney does not have. We don’t have to accept Romney. People can protest outside the primaries as well. I think some of Newt’s supporters are voting now for Rick to stop Mitt. Conservatives won’t accept Mitt very well. This entire thing is a nightmare.

Romney's people in Wisconsin are starting to get a little worried. The believe they can win, but the margin is being shaved down in the last few days. Last minute internals seem to show the gap closer with Rick Santorum than what is commonly reported. It will be a real fight of turn out the vote on Tuesday. Most Wisconsinites have taken a very dim view of the negative campaigning, and most of their ire in that regard seems to be toward Romney than Santorum as they have been bombarded, and as mid westerners, they don't like it. There might even be a mini-anti-Romney backlash on Tuesday in some quarters who knows (one prays). Rural Wisconsites/conservative areas are breaking hard for Santorum it seems as well. Speaker Gingrich and Ron Paul don't seem to be numerical factors at this point. Tuesday weather in Wisconsin calls for showers or perhaps occasional thundershowers in a number of parts of the state.

I believe you are right that where necessary, Newt supporters are lining up behind Santorum.

Because Newt needs none of this, but stays in to help us stop Romney he would be the first to say, “play the game where you must, just get us to convention.

Damn straight that Newt nor Ron Paul can trust Rick with their delegates outright. They HAVE to stay in because Rick is a disciple of the Establishment. Always has been a climber.

Rick has to go back to Virginia where he would not Not want to be removed from the people in the Beltway. Newt already knows what they think of him. Newt has the gravitas to endure the insiders writing negative stories of him. I sent an email to Newt earlier about the political professor from FSU-and said to stay fighting. Someone has to help our country from these radicals.

What do the polls say about Obama v. Newt? Obama v. Santorum?

Well the Obama campaign people have already stated they "Do not want an Obama/Newt debate "....and everybody recognizes why that is.

Among independents in the new poll, Romney is viewed favorably by 35 percent and unfavorably by 52 percent. Among independents four years ago, Obama hit his low point in mid-April 2008, when 57 percent said they had favorable impressions and 37 percent had unfavorable ones.

Agreed. Obama would get under Rick’s skin by circling back to Rick’s social statements or making ridiculous claims and Rick would lose his cool, meaning Obama would win.

I’m voting for Gingrich in Texas. I vote for the person that I think can do the best job and who supports my values. After watching a couple debates and listening to the criticism from both his fellow candidates and hearing that the Dem. party all but fear him, thinking of an Obama Gingrich debate (without a teleprompter), is music to my ears. When McCain debated (??) Obama, it was just embarrassing to watch and hear his pitiful answers. Newt has the wisdom, knowledge and leadership to turn America’s train wreck if given the chance. We need some shocking work done and he can do it I am convinced. I am supporting him because he is going all the way to the convention and proving our conservative values must not be thrown away with an establishment candidate.

Agreed, if that’s the deal, Newt as VP - signed, sealed and delivered - let’s get R done.

This has been a long time in coming, should have been done earlier, but at least now we can stop Mittens.

I didn’t say stop living just because life will never be like the 50’s again. Anyone who thinks it will is delusional. But, just so you know; I don’t go to work, I’m retired. My kids are all grown and on their own. I’ve got plenty of money saved because my wife and I are smart money managers. My home, acreage and both vehicles are paid for. So, old gal, how you like that? Now; who’s stupid? I’ve got more sense in the northeast corner of my a** than you have in your head. Now, you have a good day!

From the article....

“I imagine there’s going to be a lot of negotiation and compromising between the pro-Newt Gingrich and the pro-Rick Santorum delegates,” he said. You may have a Newt Gingrich-Rick Santorum ticket. You may have a Rick Santorum-Newt Gingrich ticket. Nobody knows how that ticket’s going to work out. But I imagine it’ll end up being something like that.”

Interesting. Newt should definitely be on the top of the ticket. He has better ideas and can debate better than Santorum.

In this case yes, because it was apparently overheard by others and not something that was being reported. Either or we know they don’t want a Newt/Obama debate without saying anything at all. It’s common knowledge Newt would be all over Obama and he simply would not survive the exposure Newt would reveal.

[Talk of Shared Ticket to Stop Romney]

This headline is bogus. It is only something the writer of this opinion added in. There is not talk of a shared ticket. Only that Newt has announced that he will support whom ever is the nominee. Newt just reaffirmed this claim on Meet the Press and FOX News.

I will also predict, that after tomorrow, and the kind of win that Romney will have, is going to force Newt to make that choice sooner. It will make Newt's effort impossible, and Santorum's as good as impossible. Newt's Super PAC supporter will also move over to Romney shortly after.

Newt will support Romney. He is not that stupid to believe that Santorum has a Snow Ball's chance in Hell of beating Obama. Even with him as the VP. After all, Newt loves his country above all else and will do what is best for it.
