Hmmmm, they need to get one of those shot locators onsite to determine where the sound is coming from.

Sounds just like an artillery round or some sort of explosion. Earthquakes that I've experienced lasted much longer and very large explosions kind of roar by you for a few seconds.

Pack the kids honey... We're going to visit grandma and grandpa for a week or two!

Muchas gracias!

A complete historical eyewitness accounts of the great New Madrid quakes.

Have not come across them yet but the USGS suggests there are a few accounts that mention a few booms prior to the day of the quake.

What I have read though has been interesting as heck!

It sounds like an acetylene bomb. Short, sharp, distinct. We here them here ever new year!

Used to work in a large heavy equipment building and one of guys was good at filling a large metal pipe (open on both ends) with acetylene/oxygen and igniting it.

It went BOOMMmm and the metal roofing would rattle like mad. It would literally scare the hell out of us younger guys...
