The role of women in the early days of Christianity has been suppressed, according to a leading historian who has questioned the traditional depiction of God as a man.
God is greater than any human being, animal, or thing. So, is the universe male or female?
Jesus said that God was a spirit.
Others wonder about his gender.
If God were a woman one would think there would be so such thing as painful child birth, menstrual cramps, mood swings, menopause and hot flashes. A woman would be able to eat whatever and not gain weight. Since God is an even handed being even men suffer from prostate problems, e.d. and a variety of ills.
To a true liberal, whatever God is today is due to a gender change. (thinking of liberals and that Canadian model in the news)
Genesis 1:27 - So God created man in his own image. I take this to mean God is a man. Genesis goes on to say that Eve was created by a rib from Adam.
I guess it could be interpreted many different ways.
In the Bible it says “and then in Heaven, there was an hour of silence”.
Proof God is not a woman.
They do this every year at this time. It shows who they are.
Really, what would be the point of God having such private parts if there weren’t a Mr. or Mrs. God to go along with her/him?
The traditional depiction of God as a man is simply because back then, men dominated over women so it would be rather silly to depict God as a woman. Ultimately, God is neither man nor woman, but rules over us better than any man or woman can do. To define God by any gender nowadays, I believe, limits who God is.
Apt explanation.
It always strikes me as funny when these modern day revisionists try to make the case that the most powerful being in the universe has been unable to convey the truth about Himself down through time because conniving men have been covering up the truth about Him.
God is not a woman. We don’t see the stars rearranged in the sky from time to time.
I pray to God as a male because Jesus recommended it when he taught his disciples the “Our Father”. He knows more about it than I do. I’ll take his word for it.
But a really good explanation I came across once was that it’s always been very easy to know who someone’s mother is. You can watch a birth and see for yourself that the child came from that mother. But, to have a father, it’s always been that someone must claim you as their child. God doesn’t give birth to us. He claims us, just as He claimed Jesus, “this is my beloved Son”. For the human psyche, a father’s approval is a huge thing, in a different way than a mother’s love.
Praying to God as Father is no slap at women. It’s a perspective that helps us understand the bond, and the distance, between God and us.
So Bethany, what does Islam say about this? And do you dare to ask the question?
CONTEXT!!! (don’t use part of a verse, eh?)
KJV:
27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
You are right that it could be interpreted multiple ways.
The NIV uses “mankind” instead of “man”. Historically, before the feminist movement to remove “sexist” aspects of our language, it was commonly understood that “man” meant “humans”.
Yeah, I’d like to see some of these “tolerant” left wingers, whose point is simply anti-Christian,
pose the question of “who knows whether allah is a girl?”
It’s easier to understand God as authority, law-giver, warrior, etc as Father. However, there is the concept of the “shekinah” in some aspects of Jewish theology, which presents the feminine face of God.
Then I’m a sucker for freckled-face brunettes.
