Mitt Romney defends his welfare on wheels from GOP outrage
The Boston Herald ^ | 10/18/2011 | Hillary Chabot

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s camp is defending a controversial program he created that handed out free wheels to Massachusetts welfare recipients — including state-funded insurance and AAA memberships — even as the plan drew fire from conservatives the former Bay State governor is wooing.

“Over 80 percent of participants have moved off of welfare,” said Romney spokeswoman Gail Gitcho.

I know churches who do this. It is an attempt to get people who are struggling gainfully employed. A lot of the jobs are not located on public transit lines at this point.

I agree though, not a proper role for government.
(same logic they used for the free cell phone program BTW....”how can I get a job if they can’t call me for an interview? And then how can I get there if I don’t have a car?”)

So much for Mitt Romney and his statements concerning limited government and the proper role of government.

Another Romney lie exposed!

Found another site on Romney's free cars for welfare recipients and thought I would pass it on..I never heard of this before!
Jake Tapper wonders why conservatives haven't highlighted some little known warts on Romney's record as Gov. of Massachusetts. Follow the link if you want to read about all three issues Tapper discusses. This is the one that really caught my attention. Going forward, Gingrich and Perry would be better served to focus more on things like this, and less on how many people Romney fired at Bain Capital, or what his effective tax rate is.

In 2006, Romney started a program to provide welfare recipients without access to public transportation with free cars. The idea was to provide them with a way to get to work so they could eventually get off welfare.

The cars were donated by charities, while Massachusetts taxpayers funded — as the Boston Herald reported in 2009 — “repairs, registration, insurance, excise tax, the title and AAA membership for one year.”

Romney’s Department of Transitional Assistance started the program, officially called “Transportation Support,” and nicknamed “Welfare Wheels” by the Boston Herald.
Even liberal Republican, Scott Brown couldn't stomach “Welfare Wheels.”

“I don’t care who started it,” said then-state senator (now U.S. Senator) Scott Brown, a Republican. “In this day and age, it’s not appropriate. I mean, we’re paying for Triple A? You’ve got to be kidding me.”

When I was a youngster, our church matched job seekers with employers within the church congregation. It was definitely preferable to any government solution.

I like what your church did...too bad more congregations don’t follow suit.

Members of a congregation are close enough to the person in need to realize when they are taking advantage, or when the assistance is turning into a crutch.

The government does not know, nor care.

and, ironically enough, Governor Romney’s OWN CHURCH maintains that things like this should be the responsibility of the church community and not government.

Newt's downfall was his decision to attack Bain Capital. Oh, I'll vote for him in the primary, but only because Santorum and Romney are so distasteful.

No. If we can get enough Tea inside Capital Hill we can start impeaching and keep impeaching until we get an American in the White Hut again.
