Romney : 346,279
Santorum : 289,648
There stood 56,631 votes between the two of them in all of Wisconsin. How many of those were from the counties of Kenosha, Racine, and Milwaukee (you know, along the runway to and from Illinois)? In 2008 Kenosha carried Obama over McCain by 8%. Racine carried Obama by 7.5%. Milwauke carried Obama by 36%. Which of these counties is going to break for Romney over Obama in 2012? Not one. The most liberal area on the Wisconsin county map has picked our candidate, Romney, whom they will not carry water for in November. We should have a rule that only the counties that actually carried a conservative during the general election should be allowed to choose the conservative candidate in the primary season. Or we should give those three counties to Illinois. Either way is good. Santorum had a good run here -- and if a deal had been struck with Gingrich already for his 45,944 votes ... it would have been a great run. They did well and I am not disappointed with Wisconsin overall. It's only the south east corner that is a persistent, and large, problem. Don't count on the rest of the state being too helpful with Romney in November.

Its been that way pretty much everywhere outside the east coast states. In Michigan, Santorum won 57 counties and Romney won 26 counties and they split the congressional districts at 7 each with Romney winning the Detroit districts.
As of last week, Santorum had won more than 900 counties and Romney had won less than 500. Rush Limbaugh picked it up early on when he said that Romney is winning like a liberal.

The most liberal area on the Wisconsin county map has picked our candidate, Romney, whom they will not carry water for in November. IIRC, in the past the Republican party weighted the delegates apportioned to a state based on whether the states electoral votes actually usually go to Republican party and/or whether the state has a Republican governor or US legislative representation. With two polar opposite wings in the Republican party, it's a tightrope walk to figure out how to choose a nominee. Obviously the system is broken considering the recently chosen aberrations. I'm firmly of the belief that it will take breaking the Republican party before this can be fixed. It will be ugly.
