In a sexual relationship, sex is just the “icing on the cake”. If you try to eat nothing but icing, you will also get sick.
In the old South, there was a time honored tradition called “necking”, and it was better than a mountain of marital guidance counseling for a couple to discover if they were long term compatible.
A potential couple would sit on a couch and kiss. Just kiss, no other anything. Under light chaperonage just in the area, but not there with them. The objective was to just kiss for an entire hour. Most potential couples didn’t last five minutes before they *knew*, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they were *not* compatible. No use to even try with each other after that.
Conversely, if they could neck for an hour, and still like each other, they could be married with a high probability that they would stay married for life.
If you necked with a half dozen to a dozen people without finding someone compatible, you might as well resign yourself to living your life as a bachelor, which some did.
It also tended to discourage those who just wanted sex with no possibility of marriage, to limit themselves to prostitutes. If they tried anything while necking, a quick call to the chaperone and they would be kicked out of there, never to return. And their name would be ruined so they would get no more chances.
Or they were both just horny as h**l.
