The San Quentin inmate who murdered another prisoner to avenge a Novato girl's death read a statement of condolence Wednesday to the girl's family.
"The innocence of a child will be defended at all costs," said Frank Souza, referring to 9-year-old Melody Osheroff, who was killed by a drunken motorcyclist in 2009.
The motorcyclist, Edward Schaefer, was convicted of murder, manslaughter and other charges in 2010 and sent to San Quentin State Prison. Less than two weeks later, Souza ambushed him in a prison yard and gouged him repeatedly with a makeshift metal spear.
Souza, 33, eventually pleaded guilty to murder in a plea bargain that took the death penalty off the table. On Wednesday, Judge Paul Haakenson, as expected, sentenced Souza to life without the possibility of parole.
Souza, an associate of the Aryan Brotherhood gang, read from the William Ernest Henley poem "Invictus," saying his "head is bloody, but unbowed."
"I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul," Souza said. The same poem was read by Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber, before his execution in 2001.
No one from Schaefer's family attended the hearing, nor did the Osheroffs.
Prosecutor A.J. Brady said the murder had "an enormous effect" on Schaefer's survivors, who include his mother, his young daughter and his sister.
"He has a lot of blood on his hands," Brady said of Souza, who is also serving a life term for a 2007 murder in San Jose.
Souza's sentencing concluded years of criminal hearings that flowed from the death of Melody Osheroff, who was a fourth-grade student at San Ramon Elementary School. The Osheroff family still has a lawsuit pending against the city of Novato. Schaefer, a recidivist drunken driver, struck Melody and her father Aaron in a crosswalk on San Marin Drive, a city-maintained street. Melody died the next day and her father suffered major internal injuries and the loss of a leg.
The civil trial is set to begin Nov. 6.
Good for him. This is the way child murderer/rapists/molesters should be dealt with.
Correction:
Asherof=Osheroff
I’ve seen that guy before. I think he has appeared in some TV show about prison life. It’s on YouTube.
maybe we could write this guy in for POTUS...he isnt much more a criminal than the current crop, does his own killing, and at least has principles he believes in...only semi sarc, btw...
He's already serving ‘life without parole’, appoints himself executioner, and his ‘punishment’ is another life without parole term? So there was no punishment then.
bring back hanging; I seriously don't want to feed this slimebag for another 60 years, or have him deciding who to shim in the prisonyard next.
“Frank Souza is serving a life sentence at San Quentin for the murder of a homeless man in San Jose's Willow Glen neighborhood”
Being convicted of multiple murders used to result in life in solitary confinement.
I’m so sick of feeding this trash, paying for their weight training gear, and always facing the possibility of their escaping and getting to kill innocents again.
IMHO, there simply is NO SUCH THING as an overcrowded prison. If the “guests” don’t like living that way, all the geniuses have to do is refrain from committing crimes, the same way I avoid that unpleasant experience.
I couldn’t give a rat’s patootie what their childhoods were like, how it impacted their stinkin’ self-esteem, etc. If they commit a crime, they’re guilty - pure and simple. Prison should be an excruciatingly unpleasant experience for this lot; if they get to the point where they riot over the awful conditions, great! Simply machine gun enough of them to reduce overcrowding and re-inforce the message that they are in prison to be punished, not rehabilitated, re-educated, etc.
Whatta flippin’ concept!!
Obama is responsible for far more deaths than this guy.
Exactly why convicted murderers should be executed ASAP. Like how long does it take to walk them out of the courthouse to the hangmen’s noose?
I would be willing to bet money that this guy kills again while locked up in prison. I wonder if he will get another life sentence for his third murder? They just encouraged him to kill again by not punishing him at all for his latest murder.
“They just encouraged him to kill again by not punishing him at all for his latest murder.”
If he decides to make a career of taking out the locked up pedophiles, I can’t see the down side.
I agree. We should just cordon off about 4 square miles of desert with 2000 inmate let free. Last man standing gets 50% off of his sentence. Keep repeating this until there is a 64 man bracket, sell pay per view and give the money to victims. The winner of 64 man bracket serves the minimum of whatever crime he committed and then released till the following year. Then he has to do it all again.
It's ALL upside that way.
