How the hell fast was he going that he couldn't stop when he had time to search for a gap in the stream of people?

Not only that, it was a cross walk filled with pedestrians. YOU STOP. Period.

was he riding a track bike? he should have not been riding a bike w/o brakes on the public roads.

Something tells me if he was headed for a highway full of cars he would have found a way to stop. I remember when I was a teenager the brakes gave out my bike when I was going full speed downhill towards a roadway full of cars. Pulling myself and the bike to the ground while in motion and letting the left side of my body drag me to a stop with the damage to show for it did the trick.
