Department of Energy invested millions to develop cutting-edge technology to power electric vehicles, but that know-how is now in foreign hands.

"This is about the future. And the question is which nation is going to seize the future. Some nation is going to grab it by the throat. One of the nations of the world is going to lead the world in green energy and technology," Vice President Joe Biden said in January 2011 in a speech praising federal support for Ener1 at its facility in Indiana.

That nation, it turns out, is Russia.

A little more than a year after Biden's visit to Ener1's Indiana manufacturing plant, the company's technology is owned outright by Boris Zingarevich, a Russian businessman with ties to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, a fact that concerns some technology experts in the U.S..

Isn’t this the failed company that manufactured Chevy Volt battery packs? Given the batteries’ self-igniting qualities, I’d think this was a good piece of technology to sell the Russians.

Can we throw in Biden to “sweeten” the deal?

It’s going to be a l-o-n-g time and many, many, many b-i-l-l-i-o-n-s of R&D dollars (now rubles) until this technology becomes practical and is in widespread use enough to make it profitable. How long and how many billions will it be, are eminently debatable. The evil capitalistic *bottom line* (of non-gov’t subsidies) will be the final tale of the tape, on that subject. JMO.

The point to bankrupt the United States. To take on too much debt and to transfer the assets to the rest of the world. Redistribution, don’t you know?

Think on this. Many if not most of our “Smart” weapons rely on battery power to make them work. GPS, guidance, gyros, radios, videos etc are for the most part battery powered. To the best of your knowledge who makes batteries within the USA anymore? Curious minds want to know.

Something like this is apparently used. Li-S chemistry is promising, making Volt's batteries obsolete. Ener1 doesn't appear to make Li-S.

No one that I specifically know of, DC. I don’t know the history of why all those companies shut-down production here, but I suspect it’s (partially) something to do with us being the highest corp taxer in the world, now. The govt regs/rules/controls etc are probably the flip-side of that socialist/totalitarian/commie-bureaucratic coin.

That mass exodus to cheaper “outsourcing” has slowly killed America’s mfg base, IINM. And it continues today, unabated. Pretty soon, we’ll have bled-out. If we simply and logically cut that corp tax rate from 39% to 15% or even 20%, we’d see an corp influx like we haven’t seen in decades, I’d bet ($10).

U.S. government officials said there is no law that bans transferring technology paid for by U.S. taxpayers to foreigners

Holy ITAR, Batman, that's not just the name of a Russian news agency.

If the Rooskies can get this battery crap to work in cars, then more power to them. We cannot, so I figure whatever they have is disinformation and will get them nowhere.
