Newt Gingrich Issues Statement on Santorum’s Departure, Tells Mike Huckabee He’ll ‘Finally Get to Be 1-on-1 With Romney’

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was just on the Mike Huckabee Radio show, and commented on Santorum suspending his own presidential campaign just moments ago. On the show, Gingrich discussed finally getting to be ’1-on-1′ with Romney, how he will campaign going forward, and a possible debate in North Carolina with the current front-runner.

Below are some highlights from Huckabee’s interview with Gingrich:

“I did not get a heads up in advance. We have been talking for two weeks, and I knew this was a real possibility in his mind. I do know that he had begun to realize that when you are up against all of Wall Street, it is very difficult. The money machine makes it difficult to have a competitive race.”

“I am not focused on going after Romney; I want to focus on the issues and Barack Obama. I will admit it was a slugging match in Florida; people who like me don’t want me down in the gutter. We will see what Governor Romney decides. I am going to focus on the Republican platform and why Obama is a grave threat to this country.”

“Our folks are making calls to undecideds and those for Rick [Santorum]; we have been talking to someone in North Carolina, and there may be a debate [...] between Romney and me. I would like to have an open dialogue – just the two of us, a chat.”

Here is the full statement released by Gingrich’s press secretary:

What a despicable statement.

Really? Keep an eye on the people who were the loudest, most vicious anti-Santorum Newt people. Watch how fast they become "we must support the nominee" people.

And for the record, the second Santorum dropped out, I became a Newt supporter--for as long as he's in the race.

Get over yourself, over and over, Newt supporters have said they will support Santos....so now it is your turn...even I would have supported Santos in spite of his whoring to the unions.

I did comment at Santorum’s website begging him to throw in with Newt.

Me 2. That was the FIRST thing I did.

Folks need to go there and do the same.

I didn’t participate in name calling and “slamming”. I said to do research on your chosen candidate so you would know everything about him. Unfortunately few took the hint.

At one point I was told by Mods to back off because I found something that JR did not want discussed on FR. I did so and will continue to not discuss it.

At this point in time I anticipate other conservatives will join Newt; Palin, Cain, Perry, already have and maybe eventually Santorum, since it is obvious that Romney will not offer him the VP slot. Our goal should be to deny Romney the candidacy of the Republican Party.

I believe Romney is a fascist, and the Republican Party is opposed to national socialism, period.

OK ladies, Rick is out; Newt is still in.

You dream has come true.

Now let’s see if Newt will be the nominee.

Gosh, will you just look at this thread. We seriously are all in need of mental help at this moment.

Here we actually HAVE A CHANCE at putting a conservative in to win the nomination. A real, dyed in the wool, ARTICULATE, experienced conservative ...

and I truly do not want to hear the word “baggage.” I mean, I can deal with BAGGAGE — I CANNOT deal with marxism, skyrocketing debt, race wars, or any other Obamanism one more day!!

Whether it was going to be Santorum, or Ging, it was going to be ONE — and THIS is it.

So, it’s now either Gingrich, or Romney — and we really, actually COULD pull this out and deny this RINO jerk the nomination. But, nooooooo, we’ve got to keep fighting and squabbling amongst ourselves, like imbeciles almost.

Come ON, folks — get it together. We’ve just been shown a way out of this mess ... a small crack in the armor. What are we going to do in response? Suck our thumbs?

over and over, Newt supporters have said they will support Santos.

Nonsense. I ran the Santorum Ping here. We had an agreement that we would only ping positive pieces that supported Rick and didn't slam Newt. These were not controversial threads. I was on all those threads and Rick was trashed from the Newt people constantly and at no time did they add the caveat that they would support Rick ever. Just look at what I responded to. You tell me how that type of stuff is even warranted to say on the day the man suspended his campaign for crying out loud?

>>>I was going to vote for Santorum in Indiana, now, I will vote for Newt.<<<

Two more votes for Newt in Indiana plus family I can persuade to follow. Only one cousin against Newt. Once she sees a debate, she will follow.

“It takes an ego to run for president. Look at the ego-in-chief.”

Thankfully, none of the GOP presidential candidates are that bad, or that evil.

Thank you for your kind words, Mariner.

The sniping between anti-Romney conservatives needs to stop today. Our choices today are between Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, and Mitt Romney. For most of us that means there's only one choice left; I can't bring myself to vote for an anti-Israel guy who doesn't understand the dangers of radical Islam, no matter how much I object to Mitt Romney.

Let's fight for the one choice we have left as long as we can, then figure out what to do if we lose.

And for the Mittbots who have been concealing themselves as supporters of some other candidate — please go away, at least for today. Some of us are really, really upset and may say things we'll later regret.

I’m with Newt until Newt says he’s out.

In November I’ll vote for the GOP candidate against the O.

If that candidate is Romney, I’ll still vote against O. But we’ve really got our work cut out for us at that point. We will have to fight no doubt every day of the next 4 years to keep him from giving away the store, from essentially enacting half O’s agenda but doing it with a GOP logo on it.

Thats something that just kills us again and again, that even the most egregious Dem policies almost always have big-name Repubs voting for them, providing them cover.

I remember we were so glad to get rid of Clinton (and DNC attacks on Bush were so over the top) that it was difficult to hold GW’s feet to the fire. Thats the risk we run with Mitt. He’s a deal-maker. If we don’t go in prepared to fight from day one, he’ll reach across the aisle and we’ll find ourselves with O’s second term, just run more efficiently.

Another thing; if Mitt is really the best the GOP has to offer, I’m clearly in the wrong party, I’m ready for a new one. The FR Constitutionalists, maybe.

We know nothing of 0bama’s actual conduct on a personal basis—his girlfriends, boyfriends, whatever. No one assails him for anything person, and should they, pit vipers drop like rain and hyenas drool around anyone who says anything. Yet, about Newt’s well-documented and personally lamentable past, we have every detail well worn like an old, tattered children’s book.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. No more, “Oh, I just can’t vote for someone who.....’X,’ ‘Y,’ ‘Z.’ Who are you wanting as President, a person who is happy to tell you it’s OK to let a child born of abortion die on a pile of garbage? Someone who is more than content to rake over the laws of this nation in order to abscond with its national treasure?

You go to the meeting of the venerable GOPers and you tell them there that our sons and daughters are theirs no more. This country is worth saving from their noblesse oblige and pronounced insiders carting off with the last of what’s left of it. Gettysburg’s spot to announce Santorum’s departure is as apt, not as the speech named after it, but rather, as the high water mark of Northern advancement by the South during the Civil War. The thousands who died there were brothers; the thousands of our servicemen deserve someone in the White House who will not gut them even more than they have been, putative ‘brothers’ though they may be.

Santorum left to spend time with his daughter. All right. But there are sons and daughters of our servicemen, our forefathers, whose burden will never end, thanks to those who smile and steal, smile and steal. We need someone who knows the trenches of DC and can blow the festering stink off it with a well-timed, Constitutional bat of an eyelash. That man is Newt.

It is Newt that has not surrendered. Only Newt. No one else is left to fight the near Neroesque pathology that says one thing and does another. No one. But one man remains, tired and haggard, who stands against the odds.

He should not stand alone, were we true patriots, to add more than four score years to this fragile nation’s history. Do not our forefathers deserve something more for the ankle-deep blood they fought through? Or must they sleep silently, entombed in the Arizona, now become not only a battleship of record, a state of tension, a foreshadowing of a nation’s heirs who lie waiting to see if we do indeed have grit?

Vain smiles and money aplenty will not sway the scales of what has become a grand injustice. History will not be kind to those who look the other way. In fact, there is NO other way to look than to Newt Gingrich.

The GOP-e and the MSM will work overtime to demoralize the conservative base.

We must stick together and stand shoulder to shoulder.

Dreams are nice, but then there’s reality. Newt wasn’t catching on; Rick Santorum was.

Bull schtick. Newt was catching on BIG. He made a fundamental error of spending his whole wad in Florida and pinning his hopes on that state. That made him unable to run in some February states. By the time Tennessee rolled around, the voters said they preferred Newt to Rick but didn't think he had a chance anymore so they voted for Rick. Rick was there and was thought to be a more viable alternative after Newt's overspending debacle, but we would have defeated Romney if Rick was out of the picture and people had not decided to give up on Newt too quickly.
