So you’re supporting Obama?

That question makes perversely good sense, except for one thing: We're teetering on the brink of an economic, social, and (therefore) political abyss. We're well past the point where -- if one were rushing toward Niagra Falls -- it's possible to get safely to shore. The ship of state is going over the falls.

What's not certain is whether this will happen before or after the elections. If we reach election day and we have not gone over the Falls, then it's certain that the president elected will be in office when the crash comes.

Who do we want in the Oval Office then? I do not think it is at all a slam dunk that we'd prefer Romney. Obama, from what we've seen already, would almost certainly use the economic/social chaos to make a radical grab for power (martial law indefinately, for example). But, would that bring calm?

Who to vote for in THIS election is a very difficult calculus to perform at this point.

I once thought that we might be better off with Obama in that Romney would end up turning in the GOP into a liberal party, leaving the conservatives with no home. But the more I know Obama, the more I realize that if he wins this election, the GOP is done, and so is the entire conservative movement. He’ll appoint at least two more Supreme Court justices like Kagan. It will be the end of capitalism. Very likely the end of the the republic itself. If he wins, the next 10 or 20 Presidents will be liberal Democrats. He’ll usher in 100 years of one-party rule, like they had in Mexico.

He may beat Romney anyway, and that will be the end in any event, but at least I will be able to say that I voted for his opponent.

If I vote for Romney, and he turns out to be as bad as I expect, I can easily join the chorus of dissent against him.
