Now that Rick Santorum is out of the race, what happens to his delegates? Santorum has 285 delegates, according to the latest ABC News delegate estimate, second to Mitt Romneys 661...
...But some of those delegates were never really his. ABC estimates that 78 Santorum delegates, from his wins in states that dont award their delegates Iowa, Colorado, Minnesota, and North Dakota, would have been free to support any candidate at the Republican National Convention in Tampa...
Another two of Santorums delegates were Republican National Committee superdelegates, who will attend the convention by virtue of their positions in the party, and are also free to support whomever they choose in Tampa.

What if Santorum endorses Newt?
I would pass out if that happens.I just dont see santorum doing that however I could see and expect santorum to endorse romney. This thing has fix all over it.
That is what he should do since Romney has Romneycare and began the conversational marriage bill in Massachusetts. It would hurt Romney in the other states.
He actually had more delegates than the official count. I hope he holds them and doesn’t release the. A suspended candidacy is still a candidacy, legally.
Stop 1,144 however we can.
I don’t know. I think the delegates are on their own, but I’m not sure.
CNN is saying that Santorum’s advisor say’s Rick will “rally behind Romney.”
Looks like Newt is on his own to garner the support himself, without Santorum’s help.
So the question still remains. What happens to the delegates?
While the rival candidates often engaged in scathing attacks as they battled for delegates, Brabender maintained Santorum would ultimately rally behind Romney in the general election.
Rick has been very clear from Day One that he would unify behind whoever the candidate is, the Republican nominee, because they certainly are a much stronger and better hope for America than Barack Obama, Brabender said. And he will do that right now with Mitt Romney.
Newt is busy personally reaching out to delegates, so if his stealth plan is underway, then, yes, he can do the math on MO. Win, lose or draw, Newt is trying to get to convention with some firepower.
The GOP-E has collapsed the party Newt crawled through glass for in ‘94. Without Newt renewing it, the Republican Party is dead to us in the future.
No more RINO socialists!
Jedi, I think it’s YOUR reading comprehension that needs help. Don’t attack the messenger.
“We expressed that the senator would be getting out and that we do want to help the Romney campaign, Brabender told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King. It was suggested that we have the two candidates talk to each other, which they did this morning.
He added that Romney recommended to Santorum the two meet soon to talk about ways in which Rick Santorum could help.
I think Newt needs to win 3 more states to qualify for a vote at the Convention. I bet he wins some Dixie states in May.
He is saying this already. He cannot even support Newt. Unbelievable.
“however I could see and expect santorum to endorse romney.”
Oh, no - Brit Hume said that won’t happen. /s
“He is saying this already. He cannot even support Newt. Unbelievable.”
I SO hope that doesn’t happen. But for all those who supported RS even though he enthusiastically endorsed Mittens in ‘08, this should REALLY give them buyers’ remorse. If he were half as conservative as he said he was, he’d turn away from Romney and go with Newt.
(Oh, that’s right - he’s only a SOCIAL conservative, and not totally even that).
>> What if Santorum endorses Newt?
Well that all depends on what’s best for Rick.
ROTFLMAO, they were Bishop Romney delegates the minute they were awarded to Lawyer Ricky.
The only question now is whether Lawyer Ricky wants several big money clients and a bushel of pretty big money clients in return for being a Bishop Romney shill or wants to be the VP on a Bishop Romney ticket.
I fear you are correct.
I almost hope that Rick Santorum does endorse Mitt Romney. That'd send his supporters scurrying to Newt's side in a hurry.
It will also put to rest any delusions about his conservative credentials once and for all.
CNN is saying that someone else is saying that Santorum will say something. This is double-hearsay from an unreliable source.
April 10th 5PM: Anita and I wish Rick and Karen and the entire Santorum family heartfelt congratulations for a tireless and hard-fought campaign. We know the toll the process takes on the candidates and their families, as well as the honor of being in the arena fighting to keep America great and strong. We are keeping their precious Bella in our prayers and we wish Rick, Karen and their family the best in their future together.
http://blog.chron.com/texaspolitics/2012/04/perry-will-work-for-gop-nominee/
April 10th 6PM: Governor Perry will strongly endorse and work for the Republican nominee, since our priority must be to replace President Obama and his destructive policies. As a former U.S. military officer and a proud Aggie, Rick Perry puts a premium on loyalty and therefore today remains Newt Gingrich backer.
Funny, they never mention this fact when discussing how many delegates Romney "has."
I’ll be shocked if Santorum supports Gingrich. Like you said though, he can’t maintain his conservative credibility if he backs Romney so that means he has to write off any future Presidential election campaigns if he backs Romney which means Romney will have to give him the VP spot to get his support. That’s probably been the plan ever since Florida.
>>Romney . . . began the conversational marriage bill in Massachusetts.
?
If he supports Romney when Gingrich is still in the race it makes all his campaigning seem like a lie.
I couldnt see the forrest for the trees. Thanks for pointing that out.I dont see this thing as over.
The need to stop Obama trumps pretty much everything else, imo.
>>CNN is saying that someone else is saying that Santorum will say something. This is double-hearsay from an unreliable source. <<
You have been on FR since only 2008 and have much more savvy than some LONG time FReepers.
Thank you. CNN. BAH.
look at each state individually.
Missouri
next step is CD district conventions 4/21.
The Santorum “delegates” attending those conventions will end up supporting another candidate at that time. They are not going to vote for a “dropped out candidate”.
So Santorum will end up with few or Zero national delegates from MO.
Same thing in ME in May at their state convention .... Santorum will get few votes and ZERO national delegates.

You especially don't roll over for the establishment's RINO/Socialist pick while there's still time to effect a different outcome in the race.
The widespread resignation you're seeing around here is why we conservatives lose to the left time and again.
I am wondering the same thing. Can Rick pledge them to Gingrich?
The question boils down to this: Did the RNC properly allow the Republican Party of Florida to decree its primary a winner-take-all contest for Florida delegates? Or should Florida's 50 delegates in fact be divvied up proportionally by each candidate's share of the primary vote?
“The rule is absolutely clear it should be proportional,’’ said former RNC Chairman Michael Steele, who led the national party when the rules were drawn up.
Yes, it sounds like an arcane debate about the minutiae of party rules. But if you're the candidate who spends millions of dollars and finishes a close second in Florida, it matters a lot whether the winner leaves Florida with 50 more delegates than you or five. -—
Brian Hughes, spokesman for the Florida GOP, said it's a nonissue, that the RNC’s legal office has already signed off on Florida's winner-take-all primary plan.
“Michael Steele can say all he wants, but he's not the chairman anymore,” Hughes said. “The RNC accepted our rule and that's it. We are winner-take-all.”
That's not guaranteed, however. All it takes is a registered Florida Republican to file a protest with the RNC, and the party's contest committee would have to consider the issue when it meets in August just before the convention.
Says it all in regards to Romney supporters
where RS has won a pledged delegate, and the delegate already exists, not like MO or ME:
RS has not released his delegates. So he can keep them for the first ballot or release them.
He cannot order them to vote for somebody else. He can suggest it, but not force them. (I doubt he will even be in the convention hall during the roll call ... he has no authority over them.)
MO delegates will all go to Romney. Gingrich blew off the primary and faired very poorly in the caucus. He has zero chance of picking any of them up.
garbage.
the Santorum people (and Paul) dominated the caucuses. When they go to convention on 4-21 some, but not most, will support Romney.
The majority of them will support PR or NG.
and MO is not winner take all.
FURTHER
On March 23, the Missouri Republican Party announced a new caucus for St. Charles County at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 at the convention center in St. Charles. State Republican Chairman David Cole was designated to serve as temporary caucus chairman until participants could choose a caucus chairman.[88] The venue was reserved for five hours.[89] Santorum suspended his presidential campaign on the morning of April 10, and, at entrances of the recaucus that day, Paul supporters held signs welcoming Santorum supporters. Brent Stafford was elected Caucus Chairman in a 480-402 vote, and all three delegate slates chosen—those for SCC’s delegations to the 2nd and 3rd congressional district conventions and the state party convention—consisted of Paul supporters.
Beating a dead horse is so fulfilling. You haters were warned what would happen if you kept that circular firing squad going, so now live with the result. Romney is the nominee, and he will lose.
Wishful thinking on your part. Gingrich is DOA in Missouri. Now we know why he didn’t spend the $1000 to get on the ballot. Check would have bounced.
Best possible result.
I think that’s because Mitt didn’t typically win caucuses, only primaries. The caucus delegates tend to be non-committed, so unfortunately for Rick, that was one of his problems.
Right, but with no candidate, do they have a choice now, or go with whomever S. endorses, if he does?
I still can’t understand this logic. Instead of supporting Gingrich, the conservative, I’m supposed to side with the union-snuggler to stop Romney? Why don’t we all just support the conservative?
Rudy Giuliani is pretty good on fiscal matters and foreign policy, but is horrible on social issues. Most conservatives agree that Rudy would be as unacceptable to us as Romney. So why is Rick Santorum, who is pretty good on social issues and foreign policy, but is horrible on fiscal matters, supposed to be acceptable to us?
Conservatives should not be called upon to betray our friends and allied constituencies. We shouldn’t be stabbing SoCons in the back, we shouldn’t be stabbing the Club for Growth guys in the back, and we shouldn’t be stabbing the foreign policy conservatives in the back. Everything is important, and compromising is what’s splitting conservatives. We shouldn’t be ranking issues! It’s not unreasonable to expect someone to be acceptably conservative on everything.
We stop RINOs when we stop fighting each other. And picking divisive candidates that isolate chunks of conservatives is responsible for the in-fighting - not failing to rally around a partial conservative to stop the RINO.
Knock this nonsense off.
I think the underlying issue in Florida was that Florida already lost half of its votes because they moved the primary up.
What the Florida GOP should have done is change to a WTA at the same time they moved it up, but they didn’t do it. Hindsight is 20/20
Welcome to Free Republic.
So,so true.
“Anybody who supports Romney in ... the general election will be surrendering their conservative credentials once and for all.”
Evidently, you would rather 0 win four more years and stack the SCOTUS. What a dumb f**k you are!
Look, if you want to be a surrender monkey who kisses the asses of the GOP-e who purposely destroyed all of our conservative tea party candidates to advance their abortionist/socialist liberal be my guest. But I suggest you promote your liberal jackass elsewhere and lay off the insults to principled conservatives while here. Keep it up like you are and there will be a zot in your future.
af vet rr said, “Santorum says he’s pro-life. If he is, he won’t support Romney. No pro-lifer would ever support somebody with Romney’s actual record.”
So, a one man/one woman pro-marriage advocate can’t support Gingrich?
Let the first one who has never had a change of heart throw the first stone.
The caucus was a mess "Missouris 52 delegates are not yet included in that tally. Thats because the local caucuses that occurred this past weekend as well as others scheduled for Saturday in Jackson County and St. Louis did not bind delegates to particular presidential candidates. Rather, the county and township caucuses are choosing 2,123 people to advance to regional Republican conventions April 21 and a state party convention June 2. Springfield News-Leader
