The chaplain of Vanderbilt Catholic, one of the largest student religious groups at Vanderbilt University, said their organization has been ordered by university officials to change their name. The order came after the Catholic group announced it was leaving campus rather than comply with the universitys new nondiscrimination policy.
A spokesperson for Vanderbilt University confirmed that the Catholic group was told they could no longer use the Vanderbilt name.
Those student groups who choose not to comply with the universitys nondiscrimination policy do forfeit the privileges associated with registered student organization status and that includes the use of the Vanderbilt name, spokesperson Beth Fortune told Fox News.
The university has an all comers policy. That means all groups including religious groups must be open to all students and that every student should be allowed to run for office.
Vanderbilt reviewed the constitutions of every registered student organization to make sure they were in compliance with the policy after a dispute between the university and a Christian fraternity that expelled a homosexual member.

If they are not affiliated with the school, they can call themselves Vanderbilt, just like all of the stores around Yale that call themselves things lke “Yale Auto Body”. Besides, Vanderbilt is a proper name. If they really want to put icing on the cake, they can get permission from Fred Vanderbilt in Omaha.
I have known the Catholic chaplain there for years. He is a fine, Christian man who has provided spiritual direction and comfort to so many people, and he has acted with extreme humility, grace, and dignity throughout this sad affair. No wonder the Vandy administration hates him so much.
Well, Fr. John Sims Baker and the rest of the persecuted (formerly Vanderbilt) Christians can rejoice and be exceedingly glad! There is no surer sign that one is doing God's work than to have the world spitefully use you.
The problem with non-discrimination rules are they are usually discriminatory.
Or just find someone with a last name of Vanderbilt that will give them permission to use use his or her last name in the title.
wow.
I bet their new rules don’t apply equally to other groups either.
If thy are one of the largest groups they should all join a small leftist group and change it to their needs.
The Marxists war against Christianity continues.
I am now ashamed to call myself a Vandy alumnus. However, Vandy will now receive exactly zero in the way of contributions from me because of this. FYI, I am neither Catholic nor homosexual - but I fail to understand how a supposedly tolerant university is so intolerant of a different belief system that they could do this. Either you allow a multitude of different student associations to use your name, no matter what their policies, or you just ban the idea altogether - to do otherwise is highly intolerant and discriminatory.
As a curiosity, I wonder if they have investigated the practices of the Vanderbilt Moslem/Muslim/Islamic/Moon-God-Worshipping Student Association - because I can pretty much guarantee that they have even less tolerance for homosexuals than Catholics.
Anderson Cooper is a Vanderbilt, ;0
Absolutely. The school should have to live with the ramifications of their silly policy. Time to teach the school administration a lesson or two about freedom of association.
Vanderbilt U. is a private college and should be able to set whatever policy it deems appropriate no matter how stupid or short-sighted that policy may be. If the alumni don’t like that policy, then they can speak with their wallets. And if the students don’t like it, they should transfer to a Catholic College. Better yet: All 500 members of the Vanderbilt Catholic Club should join the Muslim Club and elect non-Musim officers; the GLBT Club and elect normal straight people as officers; the Jewish Club and elect non-Jews as officers;the African-American Club and elect white people as officers; the Young Democrat Club and elect conservatives as officers, etc.
Hmmm...Commodore Catholics has a nice ring to it.
1. Aumni who disagree with this insanity need to speak up forcefully.
2. This policy needs to be used against those groups who support it. The queer & atheist groups on campus need to be inundated with Catholics seeking membership & control of these organizations. Give them a good taste of their own medicine. Turn their happy hate fests into prayer meetings.
