The Freedom Tower, scheduled to be opened in 2013, is being built to a height of 1,776 feet (541 meters), which is a symbolic figure reminiscent of the US year of independence.
The glass walls have been built to the 70th floor while the concrete floors are poured to the 87th floor, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said on its website.
The building is planned to be the tallest in the United States when it is completed.

“... when in fact we have less and less freedom all the time.”
Which is probably why we build monuments to it.
Tombstones.
What “reasonable environmental reasons”.
Are they planning to fuel the building with spent nuclear fuel rods?
Run raw sewer lines into the Atlantic?
What possible environmental reasons could exist?
Asbestos for one. The stuff will mess up your lungs, if inhaled. You cannot leave fibres of the stuff around.
While its going to be a nice looking building, as a replacement for and/or tribute to the World Trade Center, it is rather UNinspiring.
They had the opportunity to really make a statement with the height of the building. But as it is, the top floor is lower than the old World Trade Center, as is the roof. And they only reach 1776 feet with a 400 foot spire.
Now, if the roof height were 1776 feet, and the spire reached up to 2001 feet, THAT would be inspiring!
I wonder how much of the delay was related to getting someone to insure it.
