GREENLAND, N.H. -- The Greenland chief of police was killed and four other officers were wounded as they tried to serve a warrant Thursday at a home in a New Hampshire town near the Massachusetts border.
The shootout happened at 517 Post Road in Greenland at about 6:30 p.m. Police officers and drug agents went to the home to serve a search warrant, and that is when the incident began.
"They entered the home, and they encountered an armed subject. The armed subject fired rounds at the officers," Attorney General Michael Delaney said.
The alleged gunman spent hours barricaded inside the home with a woman, but sources told NewsCenter 5's Michele McPhee that SWAT teams entered the home and expanded their search when the gunman was not found.
Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney, who was set to retire in eight days, was killed.
