ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Central Florida supermarket chain is about to close almost all of its local stores. It's part of a move by Albertson's to end the majority of its operations in the state. For the last year or so, Albertson's has been shrinking the number of stores it operates in Florida. In Central Florida, six more stores are going to close in the next few weeks. Only a store in Altamonte Springs will remain open. Albertson's says the Florida market is not good for it, and with fuel and utility costs being what they are, it's closing all but four stores statewide.

I don’t get how they are going to keep only 4 open in Florida. Don’t supermarkets rely on clustering their operations to save on transportation, etc between warehouses?
I want a Wegmans in Florida as much as the next nonnative, but I’m not foolish to assume they are going to just open a store 800+ miles from their next-closest one. They slowly expand and add distribution centers along the way, making sure that the trucks they have on the road are going somewhere for a purpose. Not for four random stores.
Step by step our economy is disintegrating. The criminal in the White House and his alien advisors are consciously ruining America.
They should have closed the one near me years ago. It’s a giant 7-11. No one really buys weekly groceries there. I drive through 3 extra traffic lights to make a left into Publix rather than shop there. Horrible place.
First Winn Dixie now Albertson’s. Long live Publix!
Publix is the southeast’s megalith grocer! We shopped Winn Dixie when I was a young boy. Then Food Lion. They Kash & Karry, which became Sweetbay. Now we’re a Publix home, through and through. I like Publix for their selection. They always have options on their shelves.
The only thing about Albertsons that I cared for was their walk-in beer cooler. Otherwise, they’re just a glorified convenience store. They closed 8 of them in my local area a few years ago. Most of them turned into Publix stores. One of them became a Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Only thing we had left in Naples within easy driving distance was a Publix once the Winn Dixie closed. Albertson’s was too far away. We would have gone hungry without Publix, no other option. LOL
seeing more sav-a-lots and aldi’s popping up in florida.....mostly generic brands.....
I have both Publix and Albertson’s about 5 mins away from me. Our Albertsons is nice with wide aisles but they very seldom had more than 2 people working the checkout counters and they were more expensive than Publix. I still did get some things there that Publix did not have and vice versa. Albertsons was also opened a bit later and was open during the last holiday. I will miss them. They had great pumpkin pies at Thanksgiving. Walmart is where my neighbors go as they are on a budget and trying to watch what they spend. I understand Walmart plants to drop grocery prices in this bad economy. Publix has some great subs at their deli. Low prices and lots of clerks at checkout. Great bakery too. Obama is killing the economy.

Used to sell them Meat years ago when they had their own warehouses and distribution. I think they have gone to much more buying from independent warehouses lately (ie. Super Value/IGA etc)
Then there are those here that say under no circumstances that they would vote for Mittens & allow this commie to continue the destruction.

Remember Albertson’s has stores in several states.
What’s with Albertson’s? They blitzed into the Houston area in the early 90’s, even built a distribution center. By 2002, they were gone, sold out to Randall’s (and some others, I think). Weird.
Publix bought about half of the existing Albertson’s in Florida in 2008, but Publix does not “own” Albertson’s.
Less competition = higher prices.
We in Pittsburgh learned that long ago, when militant unionism drove away most of the chains, giving Giant Eagle near-monopoly status. Only lately has the entry of WalMart, Bottom Dollar and Aldi started to moderate our grocery prices here.
Groceries are a very low-profit-margin, high-fixed-costs business. Add to that the need for advertising, cutthroat competition etc., and the advantage goes to large chains that are already established with facilities and name-recognition.
In my area the dominant chains are Safeway and Albertson’s. I’ve seen one chain that was established within the city (Hillman’s) attempt to expand to the suburbs and get crushed, and another one (Byerly’s) come to town, set up a handful of high-end stores, and collapse abruptly. I’m wondering how Roundy’s, new to the area from Wisconsin, is going to fare.
