Healthcare reform either will ease the budget deficit or add to it; Medicare reform will either save the program for future generations or gut it -- what's a U.S. taxpayer to believe?
The Census Bureau reported some 49.9 million Americans were without health insurance last year -- something President Obama is hoping to overcome with the Affordable Care Act, which is currently undergoing scrutiny in the U.S. Supreme Court.
But whether revenue will be available to finance coverage for the currently uninsured and maintain coverage for those already covered by Medicare, Medicaid and their offshoots is a fiscal nightmare over which experts disagree.
With baby boomers turning 65 at a rate of 8,000-10,000 a day, the questions are real and serious, and a wrong move now will make U.S. finances look like Greece's sooner rather than later.
House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., has proposed changing Medicare to a voucher system that would give future seniors a fixed stipend to help them buy private health coverage, thus keeping federal expenditures at a predictable level. The change would not affect those currently covered by Medicare or older baby boomers.
President Obama has called that proposal an attack on Medicare itself that will destroy the system.
The latest spanner in the debate comes from Charles Blahous, a conservative analyst and Medicare trustee, who said Congressional Budget Office analyses of the ACA have been misleading and that the law will actually add $1.15 trillion in spending from 2012 to 2021. To make matters worse, he said, it's likely the cost-saving rules in the law won't be enforced.

I only know what that means because I lived in England for several years. How many Americans know that a "spanner" is a wrench? I can't stand pretentious little reporters who can't write to their audience.
Furthermore, you don’t put the spanner in the debate. The spanner always goes into “the works.” Rod Stewart fans already know that.
Well don’t forget the triple threat of “Consumerist Attorneys,” the “Trial Lawyers Assn. and especially the state Democrat politicians who keep adding horribly expensive mandated coverages for lifestyles to every healthcare plan of insurance to make themselves look like heros and thus, buying votes!!!
When too much waste occurs (as with most govt.) the program will not survive in the long run. Supply has to react to demand. The govt. will try to 'supply' health care without the basic mechanisms (price) to hit their target- they will miss, every time. Waste is the result.
Missing the mark most times is what governments and utopians do. Dictating participation is like forcing everyone to find a job- as if that would finally eliminate unemployment. It ignores the "J" curve- some will never participate. But that's not Utopian, enough for them.
The science behind market economies (capitalism) should have debunked the communist's inroads in our economy. That it hasn't is testimony to our failed schools(publically run, I might add) and the Unionized/collectivised anti-free market orientation that springs forth.
In an open market, the patient and the doctor would both realize that which they seek from healthcare. Good service and a good paycheck. It's economics but it's not that hard. Obama would know nothing in this regard as he's a 'communitarian' ideologue. And Chicago thug, to boot.
And he's into commonism, to boot!!!
