I worked with the Secret Service in 1987-88 guarding then Vice President George H. W. Bush on his many trips to Iowa for the caucuses. I was a civilian state policeman at the Air National Guard base. They were the heaviest drinkers I’d ever seen in my life, and I pulled two tours in Korea!!
It’s documented that most of President Kennedy’s agents were drunk or hung-over the day he was assassinated. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The Secret Service had several members billeted in a single cluster of top floor apartments overlooking major highways in Arlington Virginia. That may still be the case.

So, I lived one floor down.

They had parties. WILD PARTIES.

Very quickly I found myself invited to attend.

The KGB guy in the apartment across the hall also had an invitation but he didn't like to party all that much. His job was to carry the wad of money to pay for new clothing for visiting USSR dignitaries. Very tense job. By the end of one of his days he was tired of praetorian guardsmen.
