The Republican who came within about 4,000 votes of unseating former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in 2010 is the strongest GOP candidate to replace her in a special election, according to a poll released Monday.
A survey by Republican firm National Research Inc. showed Kelly as the only Republican in a position to defeat Ron Barber, the presumed Democratic nominee to replace Giffords.
Kelly beats Barber 49-45 in the poll, but Barber beats Republicans Dave Sitton by 4 points and Frank Antenori by 6 points. Barber ties at 42 percent with a fourth Republican, Martha McSally.
Kellys poll also showed his name recognition at 93 percent higher than any of the other Republicans even though he has not held elected office. His 43 percent favorable rating is also higher than the other candidates, although the polling firm did not release Kelly's unfavorable rating or specifics about how the other candidates fared.

Jesse Kelly has great promise IMHO. I hope that Arizona conservatives are active in this race.
A Kelly win would set him up nicely for Nov.
Was this district affected much by redistricting? In 2008, AZ-08 had a Cook PVI of R+4.
What happened to her husband? Wasn’t he supposed to become the political heir?
If I’m not mistaken, the district was made slightly more Republican by redistricting. But I may be mistaken.
I guess that her husband wasn’t interested.
IIRC, Kelly’s in law was a Freeper.
That race is downright odd. On the Republican side, three veterans and a longstanding military advocate are vying for the nomination.
State Sen. Frank Antenori, former Special Forces. Retired Gulf War Air Force Col. Martha McSally. USMC Gulf War mortar squad leader Jesse Kelly, the Tea Party favorite. Dave Sitton, who has been hobnobbing with military leaders in the state for years and is extremely pro-military and US defense.
Geez, I wish a whole lot of other congressional districts had primary candidates like these.
You’re right.
It’s John Roll.
I think he’ll win the special. Unfortunately the new district that will be on the Nov ballot is 2 or 3 points more rat.
