WASHINGTON (AP) -- First lady Michelle Obama says her "heart goes out to the parents" of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teenager who was fatally shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida.

Mrs. Obama says in an interview with NPR that all parents understand "the tragedy of that kind of loss."

If Trayvon Martin's death is a "tragedy", then surely George Zimmerman's life saving self-defense is a "happy ending." We only hear the downside of this case, never the upside of defending innocent (non-violent) life.

I've heard some say that Zimmerman wouldn't have been performing neighborhood watch duties, if he hadn't been armed. Nonsense. A lot of people perform these duties without being armed. (I would also have carried a force alternative--baton, pepper spray, and a Surefire M6 Millennium tactical light.)

Also a visible weapon (open carry) might not discourage an individual intent upon closing and attacking security personnel. I am curious: Was Zimmerman's orange/red vest a neighborhood watch "uniform"?

How did being “dissed” get into this?

I might be willing to accept that Trayvon Martin was a “toughguy wanna-be gangsta.” After all didn’t somebody on the other side of this controversy describe Zimmerman as a Wannabe-Cop? But here’s the thing: Trayvon picked a fight with the wrong guy and that can happen with all the people carrying these days. So Michelle needs to ask herself... Who is really responsible for the unfortunate chain of events?

Its been almost 4 years now and I still keep going back and forth between believing the obamas are stupid or evil. I still can’t figure it out.

It's common amongst liberals these days - stupid+evil.

I figure they're meat puppets - possessed by demons, controlled by black magic, maintained by drugs like antidepressants, spread by social media and secret societies.

And I don't give a DAMN who hears this - it's the truth. You know the "powers and principalities" thing? Hillary brought it to the suburbs.

It is a tragedy that politicians and their wives and subordinates inject themselves into criminal matters before there has been a trial and in this case before there was even an arrest. The rule of law is dead.

He wasn’t on neighborhood watch that night. He was just driving home from somewhere.

"Who is really responsible for the unfortunate chain of events?"

Ultimately, I would lay the blame at the feet of the very cretins who are now limned in the national media spotlight "decrying the violence".

This nihilistic worship of a criminal culture they have fostered on "their people" has painted all young black males with a bad brush, including the good ones.

The political left co-opted the black civil-rights movement back in the 60s, and since then, too many blacks have bought the Big Lie. And in doing so, their so-called "leaders" have done more to damage black culture than anything the KKK could ever have dreamed of. Ironic, that.

Booker T. Washington called such creatures "Problem Profiteers". The current hysteria provides a very telling case in point.

He wasn’t on neighborhood watch that night. He was just driving home from somewhere.

This doesn't necessarily preclude him keeping a jacket/hat (whatever) in his vehicle which he could don that might identify him as neighborhood watch. Sometimes such visible references can dissuade an attacker. Sometimes not.

I always have access to a flashlight--at one point a 4-cell c-cell maglite, but now a surefire (xenon) tactical. Light can be your friend--a strobe to the face can momentarily blind a potential assailant, allowing transition to plan-B (evade, retreat, etc.).
