My Dad was born in the Fox Chase neighborhood in Philly (literally born in the house) in the late ‘20s. He routinely walked through the neighborhood with his Sears double-barrel shotgun in hand to go hunting where Jeans Hospital is now located. Nobody blinked. In fact, they smiled and waved.

Can you imagine that happening today?

When I was in NM, I mentioned on a thread something about passing two tribal boys on a dirt road, probably 8 and 10... brothers... they lowered their muzzles and I slowed down to keep from dusting them and to have a word with them (it's polite, there).

I asked them what they were doing, and they got excited. Granddad was going to pay them a quarter for each groundhog they shot. Grandad had horses, and didn't need the holes.

This was probably 2007 or so.

Anywhoo.. I posted that here on FR in a reply, and some folks freaked out about kids that young carrying rifles.

They followed the rules, behaved, and I wished 'em luck.

It still does happen in some places in America, but it's well off the paved roads.
