Incorrect application, though.

Exactly relevant, though:

John 11:47-50

47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

48 If we let him thus alone, all [men] will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

49 And one of them, [named] Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

It's the same thought-process as Caiaphas, to have Zimmerman sacrificed to gain temporary peace. In this context, though, the result will be to embolden the mob and their leaders to make even more demands. Patrick Henry would have something to say about that.

The left have a lot in common with Islam -

if you appease them, they’ll just demand more.

THAT was my point: I was being sarcastic. Convicting a man who is innocent to stop a riot may make sense to leftists, but for Christians, putting a utilitarian reason as more important than a person’s life is blasphemy.
