Dogs are considered livestock in many parts of the world.

There are very few animals you can whistle to and they'll come and jump up in your arms ~ where you can slaughter them with little fuss and bother.

What did you imagine that behavior was about?

Just to your sensibilities, which I doubt they care much about. The French eat horses. When Roald Amundsen made his journey to the South Pole dogs were an integral part of the expidition, both as transport and as fresh meat. The Peruvian government has a research budget dedicated to the breeding of tasty Guinea Pigs, 100 million a year which end up on the dinner table. The moral of the story: one man's best friend is another man's best meal of the day.
