Posted on 04/20/2012 12:30:18 AM PDT by South40
Students at a vocational school who just wanted to learn how to weld were afraid for their lives when their teacher lined them up, pulled a gun from his waistband and started firing blanks at them.

I read the headline and figured a male teacher got caught with a female student after his vasectomy.
What was he not thinking!? Jail time but not 60 years.
Felony charges for a “foolish” teacher? This guy has a screw loose and should never return to any role as an educator. I mean, what if he felt they hadn’t learned their lesson last time using blanks? Public education is adrift and the curriculum so padded with irrelevance that an idiot like this can pass as a teacher.
Blanks can kill someone.
If this person shot a blank at one of my kids he’d pray every day that he was locked in prison till the day I died. Cause I’d have a revolver with 5 blanks and a live round and fire it between 4 to 10 times at his fat chubby face and call it even.
The guy’s lucky that he’s able to even face charges. I have a feeling that, after the initial shock and fear wore off, more than one of this weirdo’s students would have liked to give him a lesson on the error of his ways, so to speak.
I’ve got mixed feelings on punishment. Mostly because I’m not sure what’s going on inside this guy’s noggin. Lining your students up in the classroom and re-enacting the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre isn’t the sort of thing one would normally associate with a stable person. If this guy’s off his nut, which is certainly possible, he needs to be locked up before he loads something stronger than blanks. If, however, the guy is just criminally stupid and has a clean record to this point, maybe a plea agreement with the prosecutor is in order. In either case, this guy should never be allowed in a classroom again.
WHAT AN IDIOT!
Someone better get their attention and teach them to count.
I’m no gun expert, but I was taught that one never points the barrel at anything, unless one plans to destroy that thing. Doesn’t matter whether the gun is loaded, unloaded, or shooting blanks. Assume that the weapon ‘could’ go off at anytime, so always be sure where you are pointing it.
Learned that in Boy Scouts, and from shooting the tip of my finger with a bee-bee pistol. The lesson was worth the pain.
Besides, don’t blanks have a paper wad that gets blown out at high speed?
"a revolver with 5 blanks and a live round and fire it between 4 to 10 times.."
I'm not understanding the 4-10. 1-6 is what I'm reckoning.. prob duh @ me, lol.
Here’s a humorous and similar situation involving a ‘professional’.
He was said to have fired from 4-10 times. I figure I’d return the favor. I’d even take the trouble and reload.
Times have changed. I was my science teacher’s favorite (I like science and the outdoors, hunting, fishing, etc. - just like him).
He pulled me aside before class one day when we were doing biology. I agreed to his plan. We were to take our pulse while resting, walking, etc. After about the second time of doing it at rest I started staring out the window, had my feet up on a desk. He asked me why I wasn’t taking my pulse. I mouthed off a bit to him about “this is stupid”. When I mouthed off a second time he sent me out into the hall, where I mouthed off again and he hit the lockers like he was banging me against them.
It escalated from there, he stomped back into the class room, grabbed a gun out of his desk and exclaimed to the class “I’ll take care of him” and then fired a blank into the ground.
Then we BOTH walked in and he said “Okay - everybody take your pulse NOW!”
Well, all except the girl than ran past us as she saw the gun or heard the shot to get the principal.
Nobody got in trouble. Stupid I suppose - but we ALL did a lot of stupid (and fun!) things back then without having to worry about stuff.
“Besides, dont blanks have a paper wad that gets blown out at high speed?”
Yes - or plastic ones. Every once in awhile some kid will goof off and pretend suicide - and I have heard of them accidently killing themselves when the wad goes through their skull.
On October 12, 1984, the cast and crew of Cover Up were filming the seventh episode of the series, “Golden Opportunity,” on Stage 17 of the 20th Century Fox lot. One of the scenes filmed that day called for Hexum’s character to load blanks into a .44 Magnum handgun.
When the scene did not play as the director wanted it to play in the master shot, there was a delay in filming. Hexum became restless and impatient during the delay and began playing around to lighten the mood. Apparently, he had unloaded all but one (blank) round, spun it, and in what would appear to be a game of Russian roulette, at 5:15 p.m., he put the revolver to his right temple and pulled the trigger.
Hexum was apparently unaware that his actions were dangerous. Blanks use paper or plastic wadding to seal gun powder into the cartridge, and this wadding is propelled from the barrel of the gun with enough force to cause severe injury or death if the weapon is fired within a few inches of the body, especially if pointed at a particularly vulnerable spot, such as the temple or the eye.
Although the paper wadding in the blank that Hexum discharged did not penetrate his skull, the wad struck him in the temple with enough blunt force trauma to shatter a quarter-sized piece of his skull and propel the pieces into his brain, causing massive hemorrhaging.
12 students and none of them took action against the teacher. The lesson to be learned by these students is that you don’t stand about and meekly watch your peers get shot at.
1 - You don’t know the gun is shooting blanks.
2 - You don’t stand around awaiting your turn.
There’s only one problem....The “gun” in question is not a firearm, it is a replica that fires 8mm blanks and therefore he cannot be charged with brandishing a firearm. Under the ATF, these blank firing guns cannot be used to shoot any projectile at all because the barrels are inoperable due to a welded “blaze red” plug inside a the barrel. They are sold as novelties or as a means of a deterrent for those who do not want to carry the real thing. You people should know better than to trust the MSM for junk news like this. :/
“Not a firearm. No Federal license required. Barrels are permanently plugged in compliance with Federal law. Cannot fire real ammunition” http://www.blank-guns-depot.com/blank-firing-guns-store/catalog/Modern-Blank-Guns-p-1-c-384.html
Amen, that is indeed the lesson.
Different times - Different students.
Had our shop teacher tried this stuff, which he would not have, there would have quickly been a screw-driver up his gut or a hammer smashing into his head.
This kind of thing would not even been contemplated back in the day - late '60s.
And, ironic as it is, our teacher, Mr. Henis, was known to carry a .38 Chiefs Special in his right front pocket sometimes.
Nobody ever questioned him about it. He taught auto shop and drivers ed. Nicest guy you'd ever want to meet.
He damn sure would never pull a stunt like this.
Terrible thing. Yet, as a former high school teacher, there were those days.....
Terrible thing. Yet, as a former high school teacher, there were those days.....
Shop teachers are weird people.
Wow. I just can’t believe teachers now a days. I mean be for 2nd Amendment of course, but this was just stupid.
in other words he shot a cap gun at the kids...? Well then if he only lined my kid up and pretended to shoot him with a cap gun then I guess I wouldn’t shoot him.
But I will admit that I’d like to hold an empty gun in his mouth and pull the trigger..... since it’s empty and harmless.
There are 10 shot .22 revolvers from S & W. Model 617.
This was apparently a blank only pistol, though.
I have an old German .22 blank only pistol. It’s entirely safe. Nothing exits the front at all. The only danger is to your ears.
But this guy was nuts to do this.
He’s lucky none of the students was carrying...
Some of them surely deserved shooting.
They wanted to put in their time, get a certificate and claim to be qualified. I wouldn't buy into that, although the school administration had a policy of retaining students no matter what, standards be damned.
They were possibly going to work for people I know while claiming I taught them mechanics, no way Jose!
Must have been one of them newfangled double-barrel over/under revolvers.
FOOLISH??? What a silly choice of a word. Sick, Disgusting, and a MENACE TO SOCIETY is what they SHOULD have said. I’m very happy to read he’s facing 12 felonies. And, the reporter’s choice of the word “stunt” is just as bad. They (journalists) go crazy over possible racism and fan the flames of discontent, but a teacher lining up a group of students, and firing a gun at them is a “stunt”?
UGH... can’t even think of the proper words myself, but they wouldn’t be benign words like “foolish”, or a “stunt”.
Let’s put it this way, if a police officer had happened upon the scene that teacher would be dead right now (or at least in the hospital with a bullet wound). This article is all kinds of disturbing in the way it’s described by the author who clearly doesn’t see the graveness of this act.
I am well aware of the Brandon Lee (shot by "blank")tragic incident. I in no way meant to minimize the seriousness of this dolt's offense. When I said jail time but not 60 years, that did not exclude a life sentence. I just think his crime was short of equating to 1st degree murder.
Lots of people have been killed or injured by "blanks". I would have beaten the crap out of him.
Google Jon Eric Hexum to learn more about “ blanks”
For us showbizzy types, there was a fairly notorious incident when Audie Murphy shot blanks at close range at Tony Curtis on a film set. The impact caused Curtis to collapse and Murphy thought he had killed him. He was extremely apologetic but Curtis never got over it.
This “teacher” belongs in jail.
How about reckless endangerment then?
He knew they couldn't shoot back, or otherwise effectively defend themselves.
Accordingly, he should get the 60 years. The Principal and school superintendent should get the maximum federal time:
United States Code, Title 18, U.S. Criminal Code, §ection 241
Conspiracy against rights
If two or more persons conspire to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him by the Constitution or laws of the United States, or because of his having so exercised the same; or If two or more persons go in disguise on the highway, or on the premises of another, with intent to prevent or hinder his free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege so secured
They shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and if death results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill, they shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for any term of years or for life, or both, or may be sentenced to death.
How can it be endangerment if what the teacher did didn’t put anyones life at risk? Emotional distress is not endangerment.
You bring aa blank pistol into a bank and attempt to rob it, you will be charged with armed robbery! It’s not the fact it wasn’t a real firearm, it is the fact he wanted everyone there to believe it was.
The kids in question here didn’t know that it was fake and harmless so it scared the crap out of them and gave them a new perspective on life...which is likely the reaction the teacher was looking for in the first place. Isnt that the whole reason for such programs as Scared Straight?
While I disagree with his methods the teacher most likely has a very real and valid point...that many kids these days are so pampered, protected and ignorant that they have no concept of ‘the real’ and make light of things, make fun of and mock people, situations and seriousness where people are injured or killed by violence.
Case in point When Saving Private Ryan came out in theaters, a buddy and I went to see it. The opening sequence of the beach landing tore my heart out and left me with my jaw on the floor. The movie wrecked me. After the movie I witnessed scores of grown men weeping in the bathroom. It was one of the most profound moments of my life. However, during the movie, a few rows in front of us, two teen aged kids sat there and laughed at, ridiculed and mocked the horror portrayed and the people getting blown to bits. I tell you that I wanted to strangle the little twerps for their callousness, disrespect and colossal stupidity. Put those two kids in that very real situation and they would have died from shock without even being hit.
The point Im making is while there is no question that what the teacher did was wrong, I can certainly empathize with why he did what he did. And more importantly, if people here on this forum and everywhere stopped to ponder the incident a while before jumping to conclusions and calling for the guys head (George Zimmerman?), then maybe they would recognize the dangerous indicators that this case reveals about the state of our society and culture.
Dont be the frog that lets itself boil to death
You are engaging in the logical fallacy of denying the correlative. Robbing a Bank with a gun or a banana is irrelevant to the actual crime.
The case in question is not related to your statement. The teacher used questionable methods to scare his students for whatever reason (most likely a valid one). The kids were never in any physical danger. Federal law prohibits him with being charged for firearms since federal law says that what he used cannot be described as one.
While I don’t agree with his methods, how the teacher is reprimanded is the choice of the school district...not by public opinion. The police have no authority here since no laws were broken. Nor is jail time fitting of his actions since no crime was committed.
Next I suppose you will be calling the police on your neighborhood kids for playing cops and robbers while firing cap guns or airsoft weapons.
they're teenagers. That's what teenagers do. They're immature and unless their parents have instilled a little bit of discipline or empathy, some shop teacher pulling out a fake gun isn't going to change them. The "scared straight" programs are just as useless to these little miscreants. The young kids usually go right back to the behavior thatboriginally gotbthem in the program.
Irrelevant. The teacher wasn’t robbing anyone. He also wasn’t brandishing a black power gun or fake knife. Your points are worthless and have nothing to do with this story. Sorry.
Yeah...so? Is your alternative to give up and give in to the leftist ideology which has poisoned the minds of our youth since Roosevelt?
Ive already stated I dont agree with this guys methods, but what you are talking about is no different than the NBP party and the idiot race bating poverty pimps calling for Zimmermans head.
All I’ve heard on this post from several posters is how this guy should go to jail or be shot or worse...and over what!?...Trying to scare some sense into brain dead zombie kids? He never put their lives in danger. He wasn’t brandishing a deadly weapon. Worst that should happen to him is that he gets fired...which is not my call but the school district’s. End of story.
All those calling for his head on a lance should have their own heads examined.
First of all, my four kids aren’t thugs and if somebody lumped them in for a group punishment session and they were not involved , yeah I’d be a bit perturbed. Secondly, this guy is a dumb ass government bureaucrat that found a niche where he just decides to pull this little prank. How many times has he done this and what is his success rate for this “intervention”?
I guess we can disagree. Free country, etc........ I chose to not let government douche bags do stuff like that to my kids. Your mileage may differ. You’re a better judge of what will work for your kids than I am.
And if one or more students had killed the idiot teacher they would have to live with that, after finding out later that it was a "joke," for the rest of their lives. Not their fault but you can bet it would haunt them.
Yes, he put people's lives and limbs in danger.
None of the what-if’s you described actually happened so the possibilities and ‘could haves’ are irrelevant unless you are somehow advocating for tighter fake-gun control laws so situations like this dont happen again. Also, your impassioned emotional rant is more indicative of leftist/liberal group-think than logic and reason.
All we know from this case is that a teacher fired a harmless blank gun at young adults in order to scare them or drive some point across. While he acted in poor judgment and should face some sort of reprimand or dismissal from his school district, he committed no actual crime as far as we can tell. The media outlet that covered this case neglected to specify the details (as usual), which led many people to be duped into propagating memes that dont actually exist.
All I’m trying to do here is help people to NOT be tools.
Be careful Dick Vomer, not all teachers are “government douche bags”
I am a conservative constitutionalist and a high school biology teacher. I left a much higher paying job to do so because I wanted to make a difference in young peoples lives. My decision led me to take the fight directly into enemy territory. Youd be surprised how many people like me there are all quietly fighting like hell to take back our schools from the despots.
I can assure you, this ‘dumb ass government bureaucrat’ has quietly and stealthily sowed the seeds of free thought, liberty and reason in hundreds of young minds and watched it flourish. These institutions of influence are the ‘real’ battlegrounds in this culture war. Cede it to liberals or ignore it at our peril.
First you'll have to cure yourself of being a tool before you can help others.
Look up Argumentum ad Hominem and Ignoratio Elenchi. Good grief :/
