Hundreds of thousands may lose Internet in July

For computer users, a few mouse clicks could mean the difference between staying online and losing Internet connections this summer.

Unknown to most of them, their problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world. In a highly unusual response, the FBI set up a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet disruptions for those infected users. But that system is to be shut down.

The FBI is encouraging users to visit a website run by its security partner, http://www.dcwg.org , that will inform them whether they're infected and explain how to fix the problem. After July 9, infected users won't be able to connect to the Internet.

If you send me $5000 for my Nigerian cousin’s surgery, I can get you to the right website.

I also have a bridge and some ocean view property in Arizona for sale if anyone’s interested.

And I'm a damn good cook. A little too old to stand on my feet 14 hours a day anymore. But I still keep my hand in.

Anonymous was supposed to shut down the Internet a few Saturdays ago.

He/she/it didn't.

Sorry. It seems to end near San Antonio, Texas.

The IP 98.129.229.16 falls in a block (98.129.0.0/16) that belongs to Rackspace Hosting, which is headquartered in San Antonio. They also operate data centers in Dallas, Chicago, Virginia, Hong Kong, and the UK.

The domain belongs to a Barry Greene, of Cupertino.

Did you forget a sarcasm tag, or did you really fall for the scam?

LOL.. Sometimes you (hopefully) don't need a sarcasm tag.

Yes, I've seen all of that, and didn't want to be the one to post the name or the location of the owner.

Did you follow the senki.org rabbit trail?

I got a pop-up warning me that my computer was infected, and since I couldn’t seem to make the pop-up go away I just downloaded whatever it wanted me to download and now my computer is no longer infected, I guess. It is really slow, though.

I really hope this is sarcasm.

No, the virus wasn’t supposed to hit on March 8th, the FBI help computers were going to shut down. A judge ordered them to remain open for another 4 months.

Here’s the story. It’s not a hoax. Search for “dns changer” and you will find all kinds of info.

http://krebsonsecurity.com/2012/03/court-4-more-months-for-dnschanger-infected-pcs/#more-14008

You can also go the various computer mags and find info. Here’s PC Mag: http://www.pcmag.com/search_redirect/?qry=dns+changer&searchSection=0&site=3

Of course, if you want to believe this is a scheme for big brother, big sister, and the commies to take over your computer, feel free.

How the heck are they going to change my DNS server when it's hard coded to an IP address in /etc/resolv.conf?

I mean, I may just be a cook, but I'm not dumb enough to allow netconfig to run.

if a site doesn’t end with .gov,’it’s not likely the FBI is making any such suggestion. Wouldn’t go there for love nor money.
