Planned Parenthood pushes California bill to let non-physicians conduct abortions

SAN FRANCISCO, April 19, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) –  Although a legal loophole has long allowed the process, a California legislator has proposed a bill to formally allow non-physicians – including midwives – to perform abortions. Now a state pro-life group wants to know who has been anonymously paying for and conducting an existing training program.

State Senator Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, introduced a bill allowing non-physicians, such as midwives and nurse practitioners, to perform suction abortions after receiving training through a state project.

“I think it endangers women’s health,” Dana Cody, president and executive director of Life Legal Defense Foundation (LLDF), told LifeSiteNews.com. “They’ll get more medical information if they get plastic surgery than they will if they undergo an abortion.”

The bill is sponsored by Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, NARAL Pro-Choice California, the American Civil Liberties Union of California, and California Latinas for Reproductive Justice. It is supported by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

The measure, S.B. 1338, codifies an existing loophole. Cody said California state law allows certain staff personnel to perform medical procedures, and the law does not specifically preclude abortion.

The University of California-San Francisco began offering the Health Workforce Pilot Project #171 (HWPP) to teach the abortion techniques to lower level medical staff in 2007. An estimated 40 people have completed the course.

However, much remains secret about the training.

Cody said $3.5 million of the funding for HWPP comes from an undisclosed private foundation. The names and records of the trainers and graduates were also missing.

LLDF petitioned UC-San Francisco for this information in late January. After ignoring the petition for more than a month, the university has yet to furnish all the public documents LLDF sought – so last Friday the legal rights group filed a Writ of Mandate to compel administrators to turn over these records.

“The purpose of the writ was to get information subject to public record, since it’s a University of California regent program, to see where the funding’s coming from and who’s doing the training. Do they have any reports against them?” Cody asked. “I think the public is entitled to know that.”

From the incomplete information officials have turned over, Cody said LLDF has learned “the agencies doing the training are Planned Parenthood and Women’s Health Services, which is a Sacramento-area clinic with a terrible history.”

“Is this just another way to get money for clinics?” she asked.

Increasing abortion and opening a lethal procedure to less qualified medical personnel are bad ideas under any circumstances, she said – but especially while so many unanswered questions remain.

“It just seems like with this issue of abortion, they have a free pass on so many levels,” Cody told LifeSiteNews.

LLDF will get its day in court on May 10 in the Superior Court in Alameda County.

A hearing on S.B. 1338 is scheduled for Thursday, April 26 before the Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee.

Cody said concerned persons can contract their assembly member, and members of the committee, by visiting www.leginfo.ca.gov.

LOL . . .

Now they want to explicitly legalize exactly what they claimed was the horror they wanted to avoid by legalizing abortion. Nonprofessionals performing abortions.

I guess if the nonprofessionals with coat hangers donate to the fascist party and aren't in back alleys it makes all the difference, huh?

The truth is, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) are not exactly back alley, coat-hanger wielding quacks. Utilization of ARNPs is increasing as research provides evidence their outcomes are every bit as good as that of MDs, but they are much less expensive. So, quality of care isn’t an issue. However, as a nurse, I can speak with great certaintly when I say if the point is to have more providers who do abortions, they will be very disappointed. Nurses are by nature very conservative and compassionate people who have even less stomach for the abortion industry than medical doctors. It’s sickening gruesome work, and therein lies the problem.

Fear-mongering in my opinion. PP is trying to get their money!

They need to do something about all of the landscapers and drywall hangers that are out of work now. How hard can killing babies be? They don’t really need to speak English anyway.

Seems only a small step above the coat hanger that liberals so dread.

***

Their dread of the coat hangar was just as manufactured (fake) as the “a million back-alley abortions” lie.

Now, the last I heard they wanted to include midwives who were not nurses of any sort. Has that been dropped for the moment?

Odd that this is coming from PP, who ranted and raved about back alley abortions and how abortions neede to be performed by doctors, and how it is valid medicine.

Seems they have come full circle in their attempts to destroy life. The acceptance of this bill seems to nullify their long held claim that the only "safe" abortions are ones performed by credible doctors.

So now they want women to have abortions without a doctor and, therefore, jeopardize the woman's life in order to kill her baby. Just the reverse of their claims that the woman's life is more important than the unborn and that abortions performed by doctors save women's lives. Liberals always dig their own holes and jump into them.

Exactly. The only thing liberals are in favor of manufacturing here is fake outrage. (OOh - new tagline!)

The coat hanger argument has always been ridiculous: pro-abortion women saying “Let me murder an innocent baby legally or I might hurt myself when I do it illegally!”

Why would anyone can if someone hurt themselves while they were in the process of murdering an innocent baby?

I wonder if Planned Parenthood approves of letting non-physicians perform mammograms?

You couldn’t be more right in a way ,, of course destruction is easy ,, anyone can take a hammer to a fine watch ,, anyone can throw paint thinner on a Monet ...

The United Nations has been teaching women in poor countries for years that “vacuum assisted menstruation” is the norm in the US and Europe ,, they take young women and teach them to have suction abortion parties once a month (pregnant or not) with their friends... They also pay cash rewards for sterilizations (usually through an agency in the host countries government).

If you have no morals it could be a wonderfully profitable profession ,, You could improvise all the tools you need for under $50 and be profitable instantly.

It’s back to the coat hangers, I guess. What animals.

****************************************

You just need one of these ,, a regulator to avoid excessive suction , a few wands , a catch tank... $200 tops and you're in business..

Coat hangers were never that popular ,, the vast majority of abortions were done in your gyno's office and they billed it as a D&C..

Talk about a war on women. The state of California wants to allow people who are in no position to identify, nor trained to identify, nor treat emergency situation which would arise which might require an emergency hysterectomy to stop a woman from bleeding to death. All in the name of killing babies so women can fornicate at will without any repercussions. So women of California lay down so poorly trained abortionist, at best, can kill your children, and if you have a complication, good luck. I hope your are diagnosed timely, I hope met with an honest abortionist who does not try to cover his/her bad outcome with delay (many do), and I hope receive timely emergency treatment so you will not bleed to death.

This idea is simply insane. Do you know how easy it is to perforate the pregnant uterus? Do you know how vascular the pregnant uterus is? This is what they used to call 'back-ally' abortions. But if it has the emprimature of the state of California it must be legit. Insane!
