CARACAS (Reuters) - Officials in President Hugo Chavez's government denied rumors that the leftist leader may have died while undergoing cancer treatment in Cuba six months ahead of an election in South America's top oil exporter.
In the nine days since he left for Havana to have two final radiation sessions for an undisclosed cancer, Chavez has only addressed Venezuelans by short messages on Twitter to cheer supporters and hail the advances of his socialist "revolution."
His unusually long silence - during previous trips to Cuba the verbose Chavez has made phone calls to state television - has stirred speculation about his health and doubts over his condition as he campaigns for re-election in an October 7 vote.
In the past, Havana published pictures and video of him meeting his mentor, former Cuba leader Fidel Castro. There have been no images released from this visit, so far.

Twitter reporting that this MORNING FT I think the dude is ailing or at death door that I gather
The Venezuelans should consider themselves lucky to be governed by twitter rather than being governed, as we Americans are, by twits and nitwits.
He’s dead, Jim.
He’s had so much radiation probably looks like a raisin.
There’s a simple explanation........he’s sleeping...........really soundly............
He is not dead. On good authority that GOD has not yet made is spot in Hell hot enough....
Maybe he’ll be smelling sulfer before George W.Bush.That’s one less Commie Rat in the Western Hemispere. At least I can hope.
Pining for fjords.
Pining for the fjords.
Haven’t seen any “Miss me yet?” billboards with ‘Ugo on them. Maybe a FReeper can do a parody.
We all die.
Dictators just get a happier reaction when they croak.
He tweeted that he was really a fan of Ozzie Guillen.
I have the strange feeling this thread is about to turn into a Weekend At Bernie’s photoshop contest...
I guess this means Holder still allows him to vote for Obama in November’s election. /s
I lost my father to cancer back in February, swore then I wouldn’t want that on my worst enemy.
That being said I hope he felt a little regret that some of the best doctors in the world are up here in the “Land of Satan” and he removed that option for help himself.
Beautiful plumage, tho.

When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices;
when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.

Can you imagine the state of health care in Venezuela that he had to go to Cuba for treatment? My God!
He has a cold.
As long as everyone is getting in their PhotoShop requests, I’d like to see Hugo on Dancing With The Stars and his partner is either Hillary or Nancy doing some flamboyant Latin America dance like the Cucuracha Stomp. Can you make that happen?
Old tyrants don’t die—they just smell that way.
The corpse, the corpse, the corpse. Sulphur.
Chavez was crying: Don’t let me die, I got things to do!
And I’m truly sorry for the loss of your father. May God receive his soul. I’m certain you will see him again.
Re: I lost my father to cancer back in February, swore then I wouldnt want that on my worst enemy.
it was just astonishing he did this in cuba to start with. He could have gone to spain, possibly, with a lower degree of embarrassment and still had access to much better quality of care. Hell CASTRO went to spain, iirc.
Maybe. Could be the Kremlin Flu.
Thank you for those words. We own a family business and I’ve worked side by side with since I was a little kid, over 30 years now.
I still don’t think it has hit me yet.
I meant to add that God rest your father
I'd guess that he doesn't trust Venezuelan medicos.
I hear people like Sean Penn and Michal Moore touting how good their healthcare is all the time but I highly doubt it myself. Without the money for the latest generation of equipment there is no way it comes close to what we have here, just that it's free.
What a price you have to pay for that free though...
Hugo... Satan is preparing a spot for you... next to OBL and Lenin!!
Hey Hugo, since you’re going to kick the bucket anyway, can we have your oil?
Obama won’t let us have or own.
There once was man named Chavez
Whose head was attached like a Pez.
They flipped back his neck
for quick cancer check
Now nobody cares what he says.
A communist git from Caracas,
Known throughout all the world as a jackass;
..Went to Heaven, not Hell
..Walked up, rang the bell,
And St. Pete kicked him in the maracas.
He may be in Spain or even Rochester Mn?
He may be in Spain or even Rochester Mn?
SOCIALISM IS DYING RIGHT ALONG WITH HIM.
It's all capitalist lies ... I'm going to Disneyland!
There once once was fat Venezuelan
whose liver and lungs were a failin’
Said his buddy Fidel
I’m not feeling well”
That’s two less Commie scumbags a wailin’
A fat commmie rat named hugo
Said stealing is one thing I do know
But his anus got cancer
He went to cuba for answers
And they whittled away on his culo
Dirt Nappers Gone Wild!
Oh the agony..
(...six months ahead of an election in South America’s top oil exporter.)
There are better ways than Reuter’s to describe Venezuela. The words “South America’s basket case”, or “South America’s Zimbabwe” come to mind...to be joined shortly by Bolivia and Argentina who deserve honorable mentions. Poor Chile is getting to be surrounded by losers.
Well haven’t hear anything on Twitter JUST YET I keep eye on it I think he is ailing tha reason is he hasn’t been seen in public
Hint hint Russia leader funeral anybody LOL!
Not so sure he would be welcome in Spain, either. It was, IIRC, the Spanish king Juan Carlos who said to Chavez in a meeting in Chile, “Why don’t you just shut up!”
That Hugo is just a zany character.
We can only hope for the worst.
